Bump Out or Straight Sliders

I know there are quite a few threads about sliders but since I have to ask someone a question, I'd rather just create a poll and lets all hope it can become the "go to" for slider questions.


Why did you or would you choose straight or bump out?

Shrockworks - Great quality.
Straight - Looks better and is sufficient for my usage (no hardcore offroad; just overlanding here.) Also weren't a whole lot of choices yet when I got mine.

You are going to get a lot of different reasons I am sure. The slider game has increased a lot since 2010 as it took a while for companies to get their hands on test vehicles and develop their products. I went with Rocky Road, at that time it was the only company to offer sliders for the SR5/LE that did not require removal or trimming of the rocker panel. Now there are other companies that do that as well. I went with the bump out as my wife is 5'1 and uses it as a step. I do like the RR's, but given the available options today would I go with them again...I'm not so sure. I like the design and quality but I do wish the bump out was more (I padded mine out a bit as well). You need to look at what YOU need and what YOU like and what YOU require and purchase from that. I don't think I have heard one bad thing about any of the slider companies on here (cough, couch, except wait times) so I guess it really comes down to aesthetics.

I went with the bump out from Metal Tech Outpost Offroad sliders(they just arrived friday). I have 2 little ones that need a little help getting in and it seemed to be the best solution for me. And for $350 you cant beat the price (that was a Jan/Feb special with $100 off). Shipping was fast. I got the Trail Edition since I also got in on the Shrockworks group buy and ordered the Trail Edition Rocker Trim. Now for paint and install.

It won't though because people buy sliders for different reasons and purposes. Some may just want the looks and the straight slider is fine, while others also just want the looks but the bump out is functional as a step too.

Why did you or would you choose straight or bump out?

I bought bump outs because I do a lot of off roading. The bump out pushes you or the obstacle away so that your rear tire/wheel and panel don't take a hit. The convenience of using the bump out as a step to open and close my RTT or load something on the rack is a bonus.

Any particular reason you chose the company you bought them from?

BudBuilt because he makes pretty top quality stuff. His bump outs were also the only ones in the curved style I wanted at the time.

I'll be getting the Budbuilt bumpout (not beefy) sliders when he gets the battery tray done. I know it sounds funny, but it will save on shipping.

I went with RR for my TE sliders, and they were good, but as others have said, they don't stop door bashers when mall-by-fouring. But they're low profile so you don't run into the direction of the bro-dozer look.

For the Tundra, I am getting push-out ones at the back for rear rack/bed access from White Knuckle Off-Road, which is some guy (who is actually pretty nice) somewhere in California welding them up. He also has 5th gen products now.

As far as deciding between bump-out or straight, I figured that it's always nice to have a larger stepping area to help reach up over the roof, so why not? Another important thing one should think about is aesthetics. Personally, I think they both look good so that was a toss up, but I've come across some people that hate the look of bump-outs; so make sure you like how they will look once installed.

As far as deciding between brands, I considered each different brand's installation methods and mounting points, and settled on the BB sliders because of the relatively easier install (since the gas tank strap does not need to be unbolted). It's definitely not the end of the world to unbolt the gas tank strap, but I preferred not to have to deal with it. So take a look at the installation/mounting points for the ones you are considering and go with the brand that you feel the most comfortable with installing and relying on to hold up your vehicle over a large obstacle you can't clear.

Great thread, as I am in the market for sliders for my '12 TE that I just purchased this past weekend. I personally am leaning more towards the budbuilt bump outs with full tread for dual purpose usage. I will probably wait until this summer to order whatever sliders I decide on so I can save some cash.

Demello Hybrid Sliders

Today was the day. The folks at Demello Offroad installed my hybrid sliders, and I have to say that I'm VERY happy with them.

They are just as good as they looked in previous threads.



Had a great chat with Jason Demello and he was full of suggestions for me, an obvious new kid to the T4R world.

x2 what Mikey said. I love my shrockworks straight sliders. The quality is top notch workmanship, but at the time I got mine, Bud hadn't released his. Had the bump outs been available when I bought sliders, I would have bought his. For all of the reasons already stated.

Bud Bilt bump outs with full tread....

For all of the reasons stated so far: Pivoting around obstacles and kicking out the rear end, use as a step, easy installation. An added benefit of getting the full tread is that it acts as a mud and rock guard for the side of the vehicle. When wheeling, I don't have the mud, dirt and small pebbles splattering on the side of my vehicle.

I just had the new metal tech OPOR bump outs installed on my 2012 SR5. Really like them, picks will follow when I am actually home during daylight hours.

We have done a number of custom jobs for customers such as changing the angle of the round tube, bump outs, as well as plating openings between the tube. We'd be happy to work out a deal of some sort and take your old sliders back giving you partial credit toward your new sliders.

With the way the numbers in this poll are looking, we might consider making bump outs a permanant option on our site.

Good to see a fab shop paying attention to demand. While I'm happy with my BudBuilt sliders and hopefully will never have need to replace them it's always good to have more options from quality fabricators.

Here Ya go. Got them up this morning. They are the OPOR 4Runner Trail Edition Sliders on my Sr5.
