Buy or RUN AWAY?

My search for a 4th gen Shadow or Galactic Gray Mica 4X4 V8 led me to a 2007 one with 80k mi that's 500 mi away. The dealer is asking $20,900.

Carfax shows it spent it's life in Canada, so there is surely major salt exposure. I'm in MI, so everything gets salted here, too.

I spoke to the dealer, and he said they are getting ready to send it to auction. After they cleaned it up, they found it needs a muffler (rust) and manifolds (cracked). They estimate $2k in repairs. He offered to sell it at their listed "Internet price" and fix those known issues. It has a 12 mo 12k mi (national) warranty, so I could get other stuff fixed at home.

I'm considering offering to take it off his hands w/o the fixes for less. It saves them the hassle. He said it won't pass inspection, but we don't have them in MI, anyway.

Any thoughts? Should I keep searching and be patient (you know how hard that is), or go for it and use the warranty to it's fullest? I would offer $17-18k and see what he says.

IMO, $20,900 for a 2007, even with those lower miles is a bit high. Granted, it seems prices vary from region to region. I live in the NW, where prices on 4Runners tend to be much higher than elsewhere. Could be the case for you too, I dunno.

Personally, I would stay patient and find the right one you want, in the right condition and at the right price.

I rushed and it's not that I'm completely unsatisfied, but I wish I woulda held out for a different color, and a V8.

Way over priced. I got my 07 for $17,900 with 71k on it. And its from Texas, so it looks brand new. I would keep looking. Its worth the trip to a southern state to find a clean rust free vehicle. Trust me.

All the 2007's with similar mileage I currently see FS are in the 19-20k range all over the US. 2008's are closer to $25k!

I thought June-July would be the best time of year to buy a 4X4, due to no show and high gas prices.

I'm curious to know how much the dealer has into this one. It appears they got it at auction. According to KBB, which estimates high, dealer trade should have been $15 (fair)-17.5k (v. good). NADA is very similar.

IMO, this is "fair" condition with the known issues it has.

What about timing belt/water pump? That service is fast approaching if it hasn't been done since they recommend it be replaced at 90k miles and runs about $1k at the dealer.

Seems high. I bought my 2008 with 60k miles on it over a year ago for $20k. I live in CA so the cost tends to be a bit higher than other places in the country. On the other hand, if you really like it and its really clean and the owner has taken good care of it and has all service records, go for it. Sometimes a little more cash now will save you a lot of cash down the line.

I'd walk away, and it would be an easy decision. If this truck was 5 miles from you, you could walk in the day before it goes to auction and probably get a pretty sweet deal. If you're willing to go 500 miles for one and spend that kind of money, you could get a nice, rust free, well maintained runner. GL with your search!!!

I got my 07 with 92K miles for $16,900 California truck imported. i would hold out for something that doesn't start with problems.

I'm in Columbus, OH which is well in 500 miles of you and I'm sure I could find something that is a better deal than that. Keep searching AutoTrader, cars.com and craigslist. You will get the best deal from a Private Party selling their own vehicle and chances are you will get some reliable history on the 4Runner.

I stay away from Used Car Dealers, but will go to a New Car Dealer that takes one in on trade, but that means paying top dollar. I've been buying nothing but used cars since the mid 80's after I got burnt on buying a new one.

Thanks for the replies, folks! I'm passing on this one.

Smart move. There's always another deal out there.

As far as finding a rust free vehicle - heed Horace Greeley's advice:

"Go West, Young Man!"

Lots of low-rust 4runners in CO, WY, NM, UT, AZ, etc. They don't use salt on the roads here (they use a liquid called Mag Chloride) and because of the dry climate, rust is not a major factor here. Also most of the 4runners here are 4x4s.
