Buzzer

Hey all-
So having run my battery down yet again(3rd time this winter), I've decided to fix the buzzer we all hate. The odd thing is it only buzzes when I have the key in with the door open. It is silent when I've left my headlights on, which is the ONLY time I'd like it to work. Any ideas? Where is this thing anyway?

As much as I sometimes hate the buzzer, it has saved me from locking myself out a few times.

Buzzing when you leave your headlights on sounds like an interesting mod, that would have saved me once from a drained battery.

It would be nice to have an override switch to turn the buzzer off which then resets itself after you close the door.

There was a second alert tone used for a headlight warning, more of a 'beep*beep*beep' tone, and on at least the 1st gens, it was an option.

They are also very easy to build with a few parts from your local RadioShack. Get a 275-218 (12 volt relay) and a 273-080 (12v beeper). I put one together on my old 4Runner, here's the diagram and the parts I used.

well the annoyance is located under your dash just forward of the steering column. its a black box with a multi-wire plug in it. it just slides on a clip.
if you open up the box theres a small coil that looks like a relay. when current is sent though it pulls the two plates together and apart to make it "buzz" if you pull the plates apart so they cant magnetize the buzzing stops.
i have the beeper for the lights so i didnt want to take the black box out on account id lose the beeper.

No problem... I may not be a whiz with engines, but I know electronics pretty well =)

So dingman, how could you add my override switch to the circuit? I'd like a push button momentary switch that I press after the buzzing starts to stop the buzzing, so I can leave my lights on. After I turn the lights off it resets, so next time I leave the lights on it buzzes again.

That'd be a little more difficult, and I'm not exactly sure on that... One thing you can do, is simply put the ignition back to 'on' to keep it from beeping, this will also cause the built in buzzer to stop buzzing with the door open.
