I really want a e36 or e46 328i with a 5 speed. My friend is looking to buy 540i with a 6 speed. So hopefully we can tackle the stupid German engineering and keep our wallets safe. I figured us two should be able to get by some of the basics. I look it as an engine is engine, I just see a BMW with more tedious work.

Agreed! A MC is my primary mode of transport. The smile factor of 50mpg's on a bike vs being trapped in a cage and only getting 35 at best is unbeatable!

Dude bad move!!! I know i'm new here but I left LEXUS for T4R and it's the best decision of my life so far!!! Do you have any idea how expensive the most insignificant parts on those cars are?? Not to mention sooooooo many dealer specific tools!!! 90$ Oil changes!! You basically just exchanged Pricey fixes for slightly better gas milage. :bolt:

If he knows the right people, a BMW can only be so expensive. I know I am putting my 2001 Volkswagen Passat V6 on Craigslist. The day I bought it, it was perfectly fine. 3 days later is literally dumped 100% of my coolant. Found out it was a bad motor mount that rattled the radiator hose loose and it just poured out. Now i have a bad cam gasket adjuster and it leaks oil. It will cost $1,200 to fix. Also, German cars require special oil filters, they use G12 for coolant.

Ever since the first week I bought my Passat, i have fully regreted it. I cant fix anything on it because where Toyota uses 4 screws, Volkswagen uses 13 torx screws, 5 pop-pins, and a sorry weld job. Its like the Germans assumed their motor parts were escaping the vehicles at night so they had to seal them in. Good luck!

She looked at me and said, "Brian, why the F()ck didnt you let me buy a 4Runner?!" Now, she is right when she says I didnt let her buy one, but I knew she wanted a Passat and we need a car in the family for mpg reasons. Now if she wants a 4runner, she will get a 4runner.

I think what I'm going to end up with is giving her my 4Runner, buying myself a Tundra, and picking up a 99 or so 4 cyl Accord for her daily driver. Those are 3 vehicles that I have found to be the most reliable and longest lasting after being in the car business for the last 13 years.

Well, good luck with that. I owned an E36 M3 from new. Even while under warranty it was a hassle. I've owned several other BMW's since then, and currently own one now, which is still under warranty. I will likely be selling the current one before it's warranty expires.

Now just for some perspective, I was an ASE Master Tech at one time, and have many friends and acquaintances that are still in the automotive repair business, and have the special tools I would need to fix whatever goes wrong. Even with the access to those friends and the special tools they own, it's just not worth the hassle to me to own a BMW beyond it's warranty.

If you want an inexpensive vehicle to own and operate, an old BMW is not a good choice.

If you truly want something that is good on gas, and won't break you with repair costs, I'd suggest a good used Corolla.
