Camera wiring?

I do have a rear camera with factory nav on my limited. But I "think" I remember reading somewhere that all models are also pre wired for the rear view mirror monitor.

Before digging in there to confirm, anybody know if it's true. I have my doubts.

Mine was not. I think others have asked, some said they thought it should be, but as to the best of my memory, no confirmation. When I bought my camera and mirror from the company who makes the kit for Toyota, they said I needed the wiring kit since mine did not come with a camera originally, no wires are there. That was confirmed at the dealership when they took half my interior trim apart to install the mirror, no extra wires were apparent.

That makes more sense.

Did you go with Rostra?

The item I bought is from Rostra Precision Inst. Inc. Model 250-8804 (Slim line 3.5 monitor)

Universal Vehicle Backup Camera Systems by Rostra

I talked to Thomas in Tech Support, 1-800-732-4744 At Rostra. He told me this is the same kit that is sold to SE Toyota at the Port of Call, except this has the 3.5 inch screen vs the 2.4 inch screen Toyota uses, but everything else is the same.

Thomas recommended I call Brandon Disturbing, who is the sole distributer of Rostra Product. Contact “Joe” at Brandon, 1- 877-402-3944. I did so, and he sold me this kit for 471.15 plus shipping. The dealer quoted me 665.00 for the same kit, using the 2.4 inch screen vs the 3.5.

What I also liked about this paticular mirror is that it has a power button right at the front of the mirror. So the way I had it wired, it will come on as soon as the engine comes on. (Do not have to put the vehicle in reverse), then I turn the display screen off manually with the button. I did this so I can turn on the mirror to check my trailer set up without having to go in reverse. Works great.

That's the one I'm looking at too. The way I understand "Reverse Override" is that you can push the button at any time / in any gear and it displays the camara. Is that correct?

If I do this it will not be for Reverse as I already have one with the factory NAV. I'm thinking of mounting the camera up front as my dog loves to run around the truck and I never know where she is. Also, I'm thinking it may be helpful off road as a spotting aid.

Not necessarily. If you wire it per the wiring instructions it turns on when you go in reverse, you can simply turn it off before you take it out of reverse. But you can change that like I did so it turns on when the engine turns on, then you simply turn it off whenever you want. (Or turn it on whenever you want as long as the motor is running). I forget exactly which place the installer put the power wire, but it was an easy change at the time.

Since you are installing for a different purpose, you might want to check to see if there is more then one input in the NAV wiring, might get away with just buying another camera and being able to switch from front to back using the same screen. Not sure if you can or how, just a thought. Good luck and be safe.

I just installed this in my wifes 4runner before christmas. It was a pain getting the wires in the tailgate, but overall not that hard. Instructions are very good.

I wonder if it is possible to get just the mirror, I would like to have the bigger screen. I think I will give him a call tomorrow.

Yes. I think you can. When I called I got a price for the camera, (got really excited) then I got a price for the whole kit. Mirror, Camera and wiring kit. Still better then Dealer, but not nearly as good as just the mirror itself.......
