Can't be a tire balance

Took my truck to a body shop today because I'm pretty sure I need new steering rack bushings because the truck vibrates between 50-70mph in the steering wheel and in the seats, also if I'm idling and turn the wheel back and forth the truck will shake (hasn't always done that). The workers took a look under the truck and said everything in the front end is good tie rods, bearings, pinion, and and even steering rack bushings. They said it's definitely a tire balance. I just got them balanced 2 weeks ago but I'm not sure if they used a "Haweka adapter" but I got it done by SAMs. Correct me If I'm wrong but I don't think it's a tire balance. If so then id be happy cause I get it for free. Mine as well go back and have them do it again

Crawl under your rig while someone turns the wheels back and forth. If the rack bushings are bad you'll see the rack moving.

It can be a balance issue. Just because one shop supposedly 'balanced' your tires, doesn't mean they did a good job.

Find someplace that has the Hunter GSP 9700 Road Force Balancer, AND KNOWS HOW TO USE IT. I can't tell you how many times I've been to Tire Shop's, and they had that particular balancer, but no one on staff that knows how to use it's full capabilities.

The bottom line is that it can determine if there is a tire with a uniformity problem. Or if a wheel has excessive run-out.

I wish this weren't true, but it is and, apparently, always will be.

Find someplace that has the Hunter GSP 9700 Road Force Balancer, AND KNOWS HOW TO USE IT. I can't tell you how many times I've been to Tire Shop's, and they had that particular balancer, but no one on staff that knows how to use it's full capabilities.

Of course it can. Unless there's a defect in the tire or wheel. The advantage the GSP 9700 specifically has, is in optimizing a wheel/tire assembly, and finding defective tires or wheels.

If you're talking about when I'm idling then no. But it doesn't shake either going past 50 due to load..

If the car starts shaking even while sitting still when you turn the wheel, I doubt tire balance is the issue. What are the RPM's doing when you turn the wheel while sitting still at idle? Shake above 50 could be an entirely separate issue and is likely balance.

All you guys tell the OP to find a place to rebalnace the wheels.

I OWN a 14 year old tire changer and wheel balancing machine.

Lets get back to basics first.
-wheels could be bent
-tire could be mounted on the wheel wrong and NOT seated correctly. and not centered. thus when the tire spins it will be out of round. this will balance out with weights. still the tire is out of round.
- once its mounted improperly. its hard to fix this problem.

If you look at my tire and wheel in the above picture. its a 9" wheel and a 295 tire. very hard to make a seal so the tire can bead. if i tried to seat the tire like that vertically it will seat more towards the bottom. thus when the tire spins on the tire machine, it will hop up and down. thus out of round.

it will balance, but driving down the road it will vibrate at speed.

how the cheetah comes into play? i lube the tire with tons of bead butter and lay it horizontally. i use the cheetah to set the tire and no out of round tires.

I would watch the mechanic that does the balancing. see if it is out of round or bent.

I would not say the tech didnt know what he doing. its a simple machine. stick the tire on and spin it. stick weights on and done when you get 0.00 across the board.

totally just resolved this issue on my 99 sr5 4x4. my shocks and struts where shot, replaced with monroes all around and fixed the problem for the most part, but because the shocks where bad it caused my tires to cup so now i need new tires.

+1 I always had issues with my Tacomas with static balancing, I had the best luck with a Hunter roadforce balancing. It's money well spent to me and they can balance the tires better while doing it with less wheel weights.

Check the rack bushings though, I trashed mine in my 2000 Tacoma when I installed 33x12.5 Boggers...talk about a tire reaking havoc on a vehicle. Never again.
