Can't decide between a '13 and '14 (Update pg. 2)

Long time lurker, first time poster.

Quick back story. I currently drive a '13 Tacoma (only 11,000 miles). Since I bought it, we have gotten a dog and plan on getting another one soon. I'm not the kind of person to put them in the pickup bed with a topper. I want them in a climate controlled area. That's why I thought the upgrade was needed. Put them in the way back.

Now, I've test drove a '14 SR5 Premium and pretty much decided on that. But then I started crunching numbers. The premium is at the high end of what I can afford. What bummed me out with the '14 is that they discontinued the shoreline blue pearl color, which is exactly the right color for me.

My question is: Are there any significant differences that would make someone choose a '14 over a '13?

I think that the changes could all be described as "cosmetic". There are some small feature differences here and there and the interior and body styling but largely it's the same vehicle.

If you could find a new 13 on a lot somewhere and got a good price on that it might be the killer deal. Someone on the forum here recently did that.

Most of the '13s around here have probably 30k-ish miles.

I'd buy one from anywhere in the country buy a trade in makes it pretty tough.

The Shoreline Blue would be available only on the Trail and Limited 2013's, which may be the same price as a new SR5 Premium.. There are several nice things on the 2014's like the projector headlamps, upgraded interior finishings, and the led taillights.. but the actual truck will drive the same and be great!

I went through the same analysis over the past couple of months in looking at '13 and '14 Trail Premiums. The '14's have a nicer interior, easier to read instrument panel, projector beam headlamps, etc., which are nice to nave upgrades in my opinion. It took me a bit to warm up to the front end restyle, but it grows on you. I found a really nice Silver '13 Trail with 12K miles in Santa Fe, NM that I nearly bought, but they wouldn't budge off of $34K. Very little depreciation. A brand new '14 Trail ran me $37K, so it was a no brainer for me. I'm sure you would be happy with either, it's just a matter of whether or not the changes they have made and zero miles on the clock are worth a few grand to you. Good luck with your decision. I traded a '13 GMC Sierra Denali with 45K miles for mine pretty much even up and couldn't be happier with the 4Runner!

What about waiting until the new models come out? Then the '14s should drop a grand or two?

Really no difference between the '13 & '14 other than cosmetics, inside and out. I happen to like and prefer the new front end but when looking for mine I was expecting to find a '13 TE and would have been extremely happy with it. I like the orange interior lighting just as much as the blue.

If you really prefer that blue maybe go for the used and look for a great deal, don't be afraid to travel a little.

I'd think the new vehicle prices will stay the same when the '15's come out. Since they just refreshed the 4Runner, they'll probably run with this existing gen. for at least another year or so.

I hear ya about the front end, but the more I look at the new one, the more I think the old one is looking a little bit dated, and I'm usually slow to adopt new body styles. It's a personal taste thing to be sure.

Negotiating with an Internet Manager/Fleet Manager should yield 7-8% off current model year fairly easily. Best I got was 8.6% off sticker off from a dealer in CO and one in Florida, 3 weeks ago. This was before any discussions about a trade. You might get a little more off of a '14 after 15's come out depending on regional rebates, etc., but probably not a huge additional discount.

In early to mid June I bought a 2013 Blizzard Pearl SR5 Premium with dealer installed 20in Limited wheels, running boards, Roof rack cross bar, Toyota pinstripes, door edge guards , chrome exhaust pipe, floor mats, and wheel locks for $35k. MSRP was $41k and dealer installed options bumped it to $44k. If you can find a 2013 and can negotiate, you can find a good deal like mine. I had the dealer throw in the Running boards and wheel locks for free.

get the 14 they still offering 0% if you are financing. price difference is minimal between 13 and 14 these trucks hold their value real well

you mean like 3 years from now? check truecar.com or USAA if you are a member. Here in FL the SR5 Premium with 3rd row was only $33k

I've had both a '13 and '14 (long story, don't ask). The style of the '14 front end is kind of silly looking, all cosmetic, and is not likely to change for a couple of years. But I got one anyway. Other minor but noticeable difference to me: blue lights on the dash vs. orange. I think I preferred the orange.

Bottom line. If you don't need a new one, don't buy one. And if you just want one, buy the one that you can get for the lowest cost whether it's a '13 or '14.

I have USAA. Do they deal with trades as well?

no, you have to work your trade. but if you know what it is worth then you should be set. Compare USAA to Truecar. Lately truecar has come in lower than USAA

i test drove a 14 sr5 and ended up buying a 12 sr5 with 11k miles. i was kinda bummed the 14 didn't have homelink or sunroof which my 12 does...... I do wish i had nav or at least a touch screen, but that can be added later. as far as looks i think the 10-13 sr5 looks better STOCK just seems like somethings missing. my .02.... in the end tho, nothing beats that new car smell:high5:

I purchased a '14 SR5 Premium MSRP $39,200 for $36,200 in November. It would have been less, but it had some PIA's (port-installed options) that I could have done without. (Running boards, exhaust tip, wheel locks, floor mats.)

Use the internet and pit dealer against dealer - you can get a Premium for $36k.

I plan on asking about a silver SR5 Premium for no more than 36,500 out the door. I have a ball park on what I want for a trade in value as well as interest rate to get my monthly payment right.

Good luck! I was in the same predicament a couple months back, but ended up going with the '14 Trail Edition for a few reasons. The 10-13s were still priced incredibly high (almost as much as new) and I needed the new body style for bumper design.

You should be able to get them lower than that. I got my dealer down to $37k out the door for a '14 Trail Premium.

Figured I'd give a little update. I talked to a sales guy while my Tacoma was being serviced. They had 0 T4Rs on the lot. Apparently, they are scheduled to get 2 SR5 Premiums coming in the first of the month (black and navy). I made it clear that I didn't want a dark color and wanted Silver. They said they could easily trade one.

On the way out the door, they dropped the bomb that the price for the SR5s coming in was $38,XXX. I think when I go in next month to talk business, I should print off some listings other local-ish (within 4 hours) that have the Premiums listed at $36,200.

Thoughts?
