BTW..... Washing with ONR and drying with a quality microfiber towel costs far less ..... Almost nothing...... and takes minutes.

^^This is called "Multi Quote". Those of us with bad paint who don't boost our post counts use it :thumb3:

Lease? Modding a lease would be almost as dumb as washing it...now wouldn't it?

It seems no matter what any one of us do its going to ruin our paint according to you, how we ever got our rides clean and sparkley without you is beyond belief. :shrug:

Look I didn't mean this to be a pi**ing contest, I truly believe that each of us on here have or tried and tested way's to do our car cleaning, I'm not saying one is better than the other.
I just wanted to see who did what and why! We all have the same goal here, to keep our 4runners looking good as long as we can. Toyota knows the paint is thin as skin and so is the sheet metal, I just wanted to get anyone's own opinion on what THEY prefer.
Like I said I don't use car washes, my wife on the other hand is another story.
 
i agree with JohnnyT...ONR is fantastic...my black runner was a swirl factory due to a "hand" car wash that i frequented... no more...took the porter cable too her with meguiars 105 and 205, followed up with blackfire sealant and then dodo purple haze pro wax and it looks better then new!!!!

Try not to use them. Especially in Vegas where the sun is strong the coat of sealant or wax is particularly more important than most places. It just won't hold up to 1 or 2 of these washes and expose the finish.

True. All of you who regularly use car washes will indeed ruin your paint. You'll see it clearly in a couple of years. Your black trim also.

Johnny T like I said I don't use them I hand wash mine with the rinse free stuff I can't remember right now and I am pleased with the results. I understand that the heat in Vegas is bad for paint and my truck sits in the sun ALL day. I just wanted to see what everyone else is doing.
 
I only hand wash because it does not fit in the auto car washers here. Used to take an hour but got it down to 30 min with the help of a Metro Vacuum SK-1 Air Force Blaster Sidekick Compact Dryer.

Depends on my mood, sometimes complete handwash at home if I get up early enough and get it done before the blazing sun gets to work, if not, I'll do my wheels, and rear window at home, and hit the car wash. :thumb3:

I don't know where you live in Vegas but I use this place in the summer. Friendly Bear Car Wash It's just to hot to do it myself. Its just like a automatic car wash but there are a bunch of people in the tunnel washing by hand. Like an assembly line. I like it.
 
All this hostility is making me want to wash my car.

I ran my Saab 900 turbo through a brush car wash for about 2 years a decade ago and it did wreck the finish. The hood in particular. That was enought for me. I use touchless car washes on the regular now and run a towel over it if time allows. Our leased Sienna gets run through the brush wash but at a much lower frequency than I did with the Saab.

I had a '03 Sport in basic black. Owned it for almost 8 years until I traded it in for my current ride, an '11 LE. Kept it clean with a combination of me hand washing (when it was nice enough and when I had the time), waxing and taking it to a very good local car wash (soft cloth). When I traded it in the dealer mentioned what great condition it was in, inside and out (also only had 85K for mileage) and that he couldn't believe it was 8 years old. And I probably took it more to the car wash more than I hand washed it,...paint looked great.

Now, I did garage my vehicle -- you live in Vegas, sun is more harsh there so maybe you have to more careful about how you care for then paint there. Also, you do make some valid point regarding car washes.

My point is, you can't make blanket statements regarding washing and/or waxing/caring for vehicle's paint. Where you live and how you store your vehicle make a big difference.

I dont think he is making blanket statements.... it is a fact that automated car washes kill the paint finish. Your paint may have looked great but you can bet that it was in a degraded state.... no doubt. He is a "detailer" by trade so of course he is going to be opinionated. It was stated best back on page one.... it all depends on what your priorities are.

Spot on...... Although I am making a blanket statement because there is no doubt.

And yes, a garaged vehicle is far, far easier to maintain and takes far less abuse. A major advantage for sure.
 
I use the "do it yourself" car wash. I make sure to spray off the brush though very well before I use it so it doesn't contain any grit/stone.

But the car washes that have the brushes are awful. They scratch the holy hell out of your clear coat. Avoid.
 
i worship my car the first year, thinking i'd never do automatic car wash for the fear of damaging the paint finish...

but after first year or so... well... that becomes the least bit of my concern...

i thought everyone operate this way?
