Cargo Box

[q 4runner]

My family and I have been on several long trips in our 4 runner. I believe that it is time to suck it up and get a cargo box. I am looking at a hitch mounted one rather than a roof mounted one, mainly because my friend forgot that he had his bike attached one time and drove into a car wash bay. Let me say, his roof was not pretty afterwards.

Any help would be awesome!

Not sure how much space you are looking to gain, I bought a hitch mounted rack for 50 bucks or so, I have a large Pelican case but you can get nice heavy duty cases or just go the rubbermaid route with some good ratchet straps, for 100-120bucks total, I like the rack because it doesnt take much to install, and does not take much garage space to store, I just hang on the wall. if you go this route, make sure you get a rack that has an offset hitch, if it goes strait, it hangs a bit low, mine is offset upwards about 2-3" also the configuration in the photo did not block the license plate.

Thanks for the response. I am thinking about the one below. Would like to have it enclosed so I can secure my hunting clothes in there as well. Just worried about the exhaust going against the plastic. Any thoughts?

Your friend had a massive case of the "dumb" :rockthrow: to forget about something like that.

IMHO, the rear carriers are ok and easy to get stuff in and out of. Due to the decrease in departure angle, but I've seen quite a few of them scrape or drag pretty significantly when leaving parking lots that have a steep decline prior to an incline getting on the road. Just something to think about.

I went with Amazon.com: Thule Ascent 1100 Cargo Box: Sports & Outdoors and have had zero issues. Granted getting stuff in and out is more difficult, but it's out of the way. I put our "used less often" items in the box.

that thule hitch looks nice, it did not say the price, it appears to have a height adjustment, if that is the case, you should be able to keep it up out of the path of the exhaust.
