Carrier Bearing?

Hey guys,

Long time reader, first time poster. I'm having trouble with my 1998 4runner SR5 AWD. For awhile now I have constant whomping sound while driving. After taking it 3 shops (all of which told me that couldnt pinpoint the sound) I decided to ignore it till the weather warmed up and I could look at it. As of yesterday I am getting this loud screeching noise when I let off the gas, and theres a thudding noise and a pop feeling coming from what feels like the tranny tunnel.

I was able to capture this video last night on my way home from work and you can really the noises from :10-:15secs. After researching a little I believe its a carrier bearing? CV Axle?

Basically I'm wondering if you guys can tell from this video whats going on? Or if there is anything I can check.

Thanks guys,
Doug

I didn't think 4runners had carrier bearings.

Could be rear driveline u-joints. Crawl under and grab your driveline and see if you have slop coming from the u-joints. And maybe try greasing them if it has not been done in a while to see if the screeching dies down.

That is really strange sound

If it’s the rear differential then I would do something about it soon. It sounds like side bearings in the rear diff, could be pinion bearings but they usually whine.

I guess it could be the drive shaft, get under there and yank of the drive shaft see if it has any play, it should be solid.

Make sure your rear diff has enough gear lube in it.
