Cartzo's 87 4Runner Homemade Long-Travel Build

Why don't you draw me up some LT plans so I can fab em' up and level the front with the back? :whipping2

$500 for plans, $1000 and I'll make you an LT, $1500 to include shipping. And I need your front end dimensions and desired travel :whip:

EDIT: If you buy me bypasses I'll make you plans and get the dimensions myself and print them in an easily readable format and maybe make them for you :D

Done a bit over the last few weeks. I blacked out my rims. We'll see how long they last. I have buddy that said he could powder coat them for $100 so if they get too dinged up I'll have them sandblasted and powder coated.

I also modded my parking lights in to blinkers using 4crawlers guide. It's awesome I'm super happy with how it turned out. I siliconed and everything for a water tight fit.

The shocks are a lot bigger than I was expecting, so it looks like I'm going to have to go through the floor a bit. I'm just going to put a bar across the stock roll bar and put a couple braces down. That should hold me over till I get bypasses and make an actual bed cage.

Nice build . How much travel on the shocks? Do you have any shots of the rear flexed?

Thanks man. They have 12" of travel. They are huge! A lot bigger than I was expecting so I'm having the bring them up through the bed. I'm going to remove my roll bar and take it to work and should have it done next week. I need to pull the shocks apart and revalve them because they came off a Ford Raptor. I don't have any flex shots yet. Just a bit more to do then I'll have to snap a few

Yesterday was pretty productive. Yes even on Christmas the yota is still #1 :p

I put my front tires back on. They look mean!!

I got new Rockford 100% copper wiring for my sound system so I threw that in.

I've had a new throttle cable laying around for a while so I put that in too. I'm really surprised at the difference. It is so much smoother and hopefully it won't stick anymore.

I got a heater valve off Amazon for a 2nd gen. They even sent 2 oil filters which is pretty cool. My old valve was too stiff and I didn't want to ruin another control cable. This one is very smooth and I like that it is plastic. I had to drill another hole to mount it and only one screw is holding it.. I wish I could utilize the stock mounts but whatever. Because the valve isn't made for a first gen, the climate control lever on the interior only moves about half way over at full heat. I don't care though. Function over looks any day

Took off my sway bar. I. Love. PB Blaster.

Took off the rest of the exhaust tube to get the cat off. I had to use a cutting wheel on the bolts because they were so rusted. I got a good deal on a Flowmaster Super 44 Series muffler. I originally wanted a 50 series for a mellow tone, but a local deal came up so I jumped on it. I'm wanting to eliminate the cat completely and go 2" pipe all they way with the Flowmaster.

Cut some holes in my bed for the shocks. Now for some measuring and I'll take the roll bar to work and get it done this week. I'm still not sure how I'm going to relocate the brake component that is normally mounted on the passenger side frame above the axle.. It is barely in the way. I'm hoping I can just squeeze the shock in there and maybe bend the brake lines to clear it... I don't know. We'll see

I got my roll bar done this week. I'll have to go pick up some primer tomorrow so I can get it painted and hopefully installed Sunday. I'm happy with how it turned out. It should last me a while. It looks pretty bad ass!

P.S. - I think it's safe to say I'm a better welder than Toyota was 27 years ago.. The fist picture is a weld on the stock roll bar. Porosity, over-roll, under-cut... pretty much everything you don't want in a weld. Super ugly. I was wanting to fix it but I was in such a hurry to get this thing done I didn't get around to it

I finally got the Yota on all 4's again. I got some black lug nuts also. The thing looks awesome!

Revalved the shocks this weekend. I ordered shims from Poly Performance and they didn't have .010's so I only have .008's and what came in the shocks to work with.

How I got them
Compression: .008, .008, .012, .012, .012, .012, .032
Rebound: all .008's (5)

1st Revalve
Compression: .008, .008, .008, .008, .012, .032
Rebound: all .008's (6)

Ran into a little problem on the shock install. I didn't make the axle mounts long enough to account for all of the down travel. I'll be busting my ass at work tomorrow to get longer ones done on my break time and hopefully have them welded on the axle tomorrow. Then Tuesday I need to take the shocks to a shop to get charged

Hopefully taking the Runner to the muffler shop tomorrow to get the exhaust all done. Then getting the shocks charged on Wednesday and hopefully having the thing drive-able Wednesday night :thumb:

The Yota is on the road again! I got everything in last night and couldn't resist taking it up Millville. Even had time to throw the subs in :) The difference is unbelievable and I still have a lot of shock tuning to do. I feel like taking the sway bar off made a huge difference in the ride off road. I was having a hard time judging how big the bumps were cause it was handling them so smooth. It was way slick and icy, but I threw it in 4 lo, hit 4th gear, and flew up the canyon. Good music bumping; just me, the yota, and the mountain. Definitely and unforgettable experience.

The shocks raised the back end even higher.. I think 200 psi is a bit much for the rear of a 1st gen, but that's what the shocks call for. I might try 150-175 psi next time. I'll do a little more research about it before I decide. I think it's earned a temporary nickname as the Stink-bug (ass end sticking up/no cat). I think I have decided to order some BJ spacers from 4crawler because LT is going to be pushed out a bit (just bought a motorcycle).

As for the exhaust, it's pretty loud! I was unsure about it the first time I started it up.. but it is growing on me. It is low for a 4 cylinder. It sounds somewhat like my friend's 3.slow, but way more bad ass  The power increase is pretty ridiculous compared to the last time I drove it. Instead of losing speed in 3rd up a steep road, I can gain speed. Can now hold 45+ up hills consistently.

Today, something a bit weird happened. For starters I left my lights on and killed the battery  Had it jumped, let it run for a sec, and it was fine. I went to the gas station for a drink. I shut the truck off, went inside, came back out, started it up, and I could tell something weird was going on. I pulled out on to the road and I was lacking power. I looked at the dash and my check engine light was on. I pulled over and turned the key completely off, but my start was still firing/engaged somehow. With the key out, the starter just kept cranking... I was like "shit if my starter is going out I might as well get it home." I was only a couple blocks from home so I turned the key and let it start itself up. On the road to my house there are these "inverted speed bumps" (so like dips instead of bumps) for water to run to the drain. I figured something on the starter was stuck so maybe I could knock it loose. So I got up to maybe 30mph, killed the engine, and hit the dip. Whatever it was, hitting that bump fixed it. I had enough speed to roll into my driveway. I took a look at the starter and everything seemed fine. No loose wires or bolts. I started it up in the driveway twice and it worked like normal. I'm not sure what the deal was/is, but I'm hoping it won't happen again. I sure it's an old starter, but if anyone has any ideas of why that happened I'd like to hear em!

Well I think that's about it for now..

So in the first 4 days I've had the Yota going I've taken it up Millville twice and Hyde Park once. I got pretty stuck in Hyde Park with snivilous and the USU Offroading Club. A jeep got more stuck than me so I didn't feel too dumb. Next on my list is BJ spacers and tires.. LT might have to wait a bit longer. My all-terrains are terrible in snow. I got it to flex a bit though. The leafs are settling in a bit I think which is good.

The starter solenoid might be going out and hitting the bump kicked it over or something. Our FJ40 had a similar issue (it has yet to be fully fired up from the rebuild) where if you put the key in and cranked it and then stopped (and even removed the key) it would just keep cranking over until the battery was disconnected. After I left to come back to school my dad figured out the solenoid was faulty and would remain engaged once power was given to it. Food for thought. The roll cage blacked out with the shocks mounted looks so slick :thumb:
