CB Radio in 3rd gen Runner.

I can take some pictures when I get home. But if you are this usure with wiring, just mount the radio where you want it and take it to a shop for the wiring.

I ran the power wire direct into the fuse box under the dash, just plugged it into an open slot. then I ran the ground out to one of the fender bolts under the hood. That may not be the "right" way to do it as I'm no electrician, but it works with no issues.

Here is how I did it:

Cut off one of the two auxiliary power port plugs (blue) under the radio and attached a female WeatherPack connector. You don't need this plug, I put it in to ease future dash removal. Using butt connectors works fine too, just leave enough wire to pull the radio away from the dash. Pink w black trace is Ignition 12v source, White w black trace is ground.

Easy.

Thank you for the help SRS. I read in the manual that it matters whether the truck is negatively or positively grounded, as to where the red and black wires are run. Did this play a role in how you ran your wires into the fuse box?

That looks nice and easy/clean. Does this mean that the aux power you robbed no longer works?

No, honestly I hadnt heard that until now lol. All I knew going into was how to get my ashtray out and that I needed a power source and a good ground. I ran the power to the top left on the fuse box and ran the ground to the first bolt past the hood hinge. right or wrong it works lol.. I like the way it was done with aux power port- very clean and it would make taking the dash apart alot easier but I use mine entirely to much to be down one.

Sort of. I took the plug off the lighter and put it on the aux port. So both aux ports work. If you look I used the lighter plug hole for a switch. If I ever need to plug in more than 2 things up front at once (never have, I tend to hard wire everything), I'll buy a splitter.
 
CB Antenna Placement

Seems like in most of your wheeling pictures...those of you that have CB's, I cannot see your antenna's. Do the majority of you guys take them off when you don't need them or are using smaller antenna's... Perhaps I'm just missing them. Just looking for feedback here.

x2. I have mine on my swing out tire carrier currently. I plan on getting one of Drifter 33's antenna mounts though since I keep opening up to far and breaking the ends off my cables.

I take my big antenna off when I'm not using it. Then I put a teeny tiny antenna on just to keep the contacts clean.

Do you get good reception with only a 2 ft antenna? Should I mount a 4 ft antenna with Drifter33's mount or a 2 ft on top of my ARB roof rack? The 2 footer on top of the rack would be higher in the air? Does that matter?

Also I could always buy a big ass whip antenna and secure it to the front bumper.
 
ive got a 30" window mount- the mount itself isnt the best, it doesnt do well with branches. But reception isnt bad.

The people at Firestik recommend at least two-thirds of the antenna should be above a vehicles roof line for optimum performance. As well, for a single antenna, the centre of the roof is best. But if given the choice between a 2 or a 4 ft whip....Well, I wouldn't want to suffer from any type of envy :lightsaber:
 
Hey not sure if its been mentioned. I need to buy a cable to connect to my antenna and I dont know how long I've heard 18' but that seems pretty long. I plan to mount on driver side rear bumper. Thanks.

Sweet thanks. I'm actually doing your exact set up. I got the write up and parts of your build thread. Only difference is I'm using one of t4r4life's mounts.
