CB radio mounting opinions

Im not completely sure the best place to mount cb radio unit. I see alot of people mounting near the center console, where as I like the dashboard mount. I looking for pros and cons of each mounting location. Also if anyone has other suggestions.

I had it in the second location for a while, but the passengers' knees always banged it and eventually messed up the mount.
 
Check out my build, I have my CB linked in the first post "CB install in useless pocket" or something similar. I really like it, clean and out of the way. Not sure if your CB will fit though. Having it on the dash there would drive me nuts, personally.
 
I vote down low. If you were to get in a crash, the lower it is the better. I have my Cb on the passenger side of my console and my VHF commercial on the drivers. I never have had any issues with my mounts.
It would also drive me crazy having it on the dash with the mic cord dangling around.
 
I bought the Cobra WX/ST (two piece unit) and mounted the box underneath and behind the dash. Very clean look. It was very easy to access by removing some of the trim and easy to wire in that location. I can also remove the mic and you don't know the CB is even there.

I just read a ton of excellent reviews on this model - and Amazon is running them for right around $100, so I think I'm going to order one very soon.

I do have a "Noob to CB's" question, though... I saw some guys talking about properly "tuning" your antenna to get optimal reception on the unit. How do you tune a CB antenna? Thx!

Swing by my place and we'll tune it. You need an SWR meter and a tuneable tipped antenna. It's dangerous to run a poorly tuned antenna (it can fry your CB)

I have the 3' firestik with tuneable tip. I
d probably have gone 4' in retrospect

This! So many people do not do this. It is crucial to the performance of your CB. Also make sure you run the proper length of coax.

Ya, I wasn't about to fry the setup I busted my balls to install. A coax stripper would have really helped me snake the cable through, but oh well, I got it. I think 18' is the proper cable length.

18' sounds correct to me. It's 11 meter so it needs quite a bit.

I didn't realize how much other "stuff" I needed to make them work and/or work properly. Do you (or anyone else reading this post) have a list of items I need to make a complete unit? I plan on getting the Cobra 75WXST, but I don't have a clue as to what else I need to buy.

I would like to get everying purchased and installed before I head down your way in a few weekends. Maybe you could help me tune it before we take off for the Pines, if it's not that time consuming of a process??

Takes 5 mins. The meter is like 20 bucks if you want to buy your own, but you are more than welcome to mine.

Thanks again, Zak. It's nice having ready-made list when you walk into a store to make a puchase. If I get everything purchased and installed before the 8th, we'll take a look at the tuning if it's that simple. If not, I can always pick up a meter and tune it after I complete the installation.

Yup, no problem man, I wish I had a list to follow when I did mine, so many little odds and ends. You just have to access the back of the radio to tune it
