Hey out there,
This weekend I was in an off road frame of mind and went alone (stupid), without winter clothing (stupid) to an ORV area in the mountains which was totally deserted because of the time (8:00 am on a Sunday morning). About ½ way down a train the snow started becoming uncomfortably deep so I decided to turn around on a narrow mountain trail, covered in new powder, with a cliff face on one side and a nearly shear drop on the other.
Well I got out without any problems, but it goes without saying I won’t go out as ill prepared in the future. The experience did get me thinking about picking up a CB radio for Christmas. If I had gotten stuck up there I am not sure how long it would have taken for someone to come along and I was deep into “no bars” territory.
Has anyone mounted a CB in their 5th Generation 4Runner? Does anyone have a suggestion for a decent affordable unit? I am thinking of going with a 4’ antenna and a magnetic mount so I can avoid drilling into the sheet metal. I figure I can fit the magnetic mount before I go out and run the antenna through the window. Not the most elegant solution but it would be effective, inexpensive and not impact the resale value. More importantly, I would not need to convince my wife that drilling a hole in the roof of her new 4Runner is a good idea.
Because the CB radio unit would be a fairly permanent fixture, I am trying to think where I can mount it so it will not stick out like a sore thumb. The console stack seems full; maybe I can mount it in the console? Suggestions?
Thanks!
