CEL after TB / MAF Cleaning?

Hi T4R,

Newbie poster, glad to be here. I recently acquired a 4runner two weeks ago, after selling my beloved suby for more cargo room.

I've heard and read a lot of great things about the 3rd gen, and pulled the trigger on a 1997 5spd with 220k miles, with great service records.

Anyway, after reading ripcords used buying guide, I've begun running through my first initial tune-up. I'm definitely a novice when it comes to self-servicing cars, but I figured my first 4runner wouldn't be a bad car to start learning on, better now then never.

I gave it an oil-change today, went ahead and lubed the driveshaft (which by the looks of the zerks it needed it).

Then I got to cleaning the TB and MAF. TB was fairly simple, but took me a little while and a lot of cleaner to get the gunk out behind the butterfly valve. Had to do some digging in the forum to find out how to clean my '97 MAF but the wires actually looked pretty clean after I pulled it out. (after TB but before MAF I removed the EFI relay and plugged it back in 30 min later).

Here's my question - after doing the TB/MAF, the car stalled three times after starting and now throws a CEL as well as idling around ~1400. Is this a "drive it and it'll disappear" kind of problem or did I mess something up in doing the service?

Thanks so much for all the help.

So I have a couple updates after driving it around for about five miles...

-Car continues to stall once after starting, then fires up.

-Idle has dropped to ~1100.

-Car smells pretty bad, but only as I'm driving around. Sitting still and idling, doesn't smell.

-Lastly, and most worryingly, the throttle seems to "slip" for lack of a better definition. If I'm in gear and really try to accelerate, the throttle seems to stall, and slowly backs off - regardless of the position of the gas pedal.

Pretty worried, and bummed that I effed up my first maintenance on my new baby! Hopefully I can correct it without taking it to the mechanic.
