Cel

I had a CEL read and the dude told me that I needed to replace the cataletic converter. I ignored him and replaced the down stream O2 sensor. The light went off for about 2k miles but now its back and I am wondering if the mech is going to tell me the same thing when I take it back.

Has this hapened to anyone else? Needing to replace the cat? I just thought it seemed wierd.

CEL

You have probably heard this before but when you change out the 02 sensors, it is best to replace both (before cat and after cat) at the same time. (Yes, they are expensive). Be sure to disconnect the negative cable from the battery after the change out so the computer can "re-learn" the sensors. Also, the CEL can come on if the MAF sensor is dirty. It's an easy fix to clean it and I'm confident there is a write up on how to clean it somewhere on this forum. If not, write back and I'll send it to you. Good luck!

Why take it to a mechanic and then not listen to what he is telling you? Sounds like you wasted money and time that could have gone into fixing your problem. If you arnt confident in your tech then find one you like

do you have any other symptoms? Bad gas mileage, sluggish performance?

Yes and yes.

The reason why I took it where I did was because they read the cel for free. When the mech told me the cat was bad I just thought that seemed strange. I haven't found a mech in my town that I trust yet and the dealership can be a hassel.

I plan on taking back to the same place and having it read again. If it comes out the same then I will replace the cat and the upstream o2 sens.

I went back to the guy that read the cel the first time and it read the same thing (bad cat). So I had a muffler shop quote me 150+tax for a high flow cat and they would have to weld it on. I think the price is reasonable.

Although, now that I think about it, maybe now is a good time to look into geting some headers.

So after searching around a bit, I guess headers are sort of a pita and not much of a gain for an n/a guy. Now I am wanting to weld the cat on myself. I have access to a lift and welder plus I need to get back under the truck and put in the new trany filter I got from the dealer for $60 and run a bead of the rvt cuz she is leaking.

While I was at the dealer I asked about weather striping, $90 per door. I thought that was a bit much and now I am looking to out source. More to follow on that
