change oil filter?

to remove oil filter on 4.0 v6(2011) what wrench is used to remove filter element?
I see you remove plug to drain oil from filter housing ( I don't know why they didn't use a spin-on)but then it shows a special tool to remove the actual cap that
holds the paper filter? and,yes I know this has been beaten to death! THX

Back to the original question, I have changed my oil once and I am getting ready to do it again as I am approaching 10k. I am lucky in that I have access to a lift. The skid plate is on a hinge and only requires a few 10mm bolts to remove. The filter has a drain on it but to change out the filter element you will need a 65mm flute wrench to remove. Mine was on so tight it required a breaker bar to remove. Remember it is only plastic!

Not sure about factory installed filters, but once you are onto doing it yourself; Oil Filters only go on hand tight. Any tighter and it can destroy the seal. Second, if you make sure to take your finger and rub a bit of new oil on the filter seal, it will ensure the filter comes off nice and easy next change.

In all my years doing oil changes, I have only really needed the help of a mechanical device 2.

:) Usually a good grunt and some muscle is all you need to pull a filter off.

65mm Flute wrench,and it's plastic:eek:...where the hell do you get a wrench like that...is it a canister type that has a 3/8" for a socket ratchet?..or can you use an adjustable generic strap type of filter wrench??

You probably go to any auto parts store and buy it. Usually that is where I buy my specialized automotive tools...

THX,I'll crawl under the damn thing and see what tool I already have that will fit!
what a PAIN IN THE ASS!...thought this vehicle had a spin on,if I knew this I would have considered a different model:nono:
 
You need a CTA 2845 oil filter service tool, 64 mm 14 flats. Order on amzon or something. Its maybe $15_20.

The combo plastic tool from local auto parts store works very poorly. I think it is 64/65mm. I had it from a corrolla. I did first two changes with it and it was a bear.
 
The oil change monkey at my dealership used the drain plug to super-tighten the filter housing. So now I just use the drain plug to unscrew it. It does make a giant mess though.

The dealership did send me a replacement that I'll put on next change, and once that's done and I am doing all the oil changes the filter housing won't need a tool to come off.

You know there is a clip on the side of the filter housing that engages tabs up top. This is to stop the filter from unscrewing itself. If that's in place, hand tight is plenty fine.
 
The assenmacher tool is good to go too. The comments about 65 mm are wrong.

My apologies. I searched and found three different posts that concurred on 65mm. I just quoted one at random to try to help the OP who apparently just wanted to bi%ch about it. What size is it for clarification?
 
What's the benefit over a spin on cartridge ?
1/Save the planet (no metal container for the element that is eventually tossed out) ?
2/Discourage DIY and make more money for the dealer ?
3/A far superior filtering experience for the engine ?

Yes I had an 08 Taco that was totaled picked up a used 2010 4runner. Yes the Taco has a spin on type filter and the 4runner has a cartridge style filter. The linked oil filter housing cup works on the 5th gen 4runner.
