Changed Filter Design/Material (Interior & Intake)

Ordered from Texas Toyota/Toyotapartsales.com. They recommended the following:
Intake: 17801-38051 vs 17801-38050
Cabin Air Filter: 87139-YZZ08

I reviewed the maintenance sticky http://www.toyota-4runner.org/5th-gen-t4rs/110839-5th-gen-maintenance-documentation-reference.html

Note the differences in the intake 'element' vs the original 17801-38050
New Left, Old Right

Cabin Filter, they're supposedly the same part. Local Toyota dealer parts counter showed the same part.

Less pleats, thinner material???
Anyone know where to source the better filters or if this is permanent?

For the cabin filter, YZZ08 vs 10, 10 is gray and contains charcoal - but YZZ08 still has the same amount of pleats. My dealer didn't have YZZ10 on hand - so I don't know if it still has the same pleats. This 'new' filter is identical to my wifes Rav4.

Not sure about the change in engine filter, but on the cabin filter, based on my research the '08' is what is in my Runner. The is another thread that shows a pic of the thinner "new" filter from the parts counter. Not sure at this time if the new filter is the replacement for the same part number. What do the filters look like in the '12s? Anyone have pics?

On my 2012 Limited, my cabin filter looks exactly like the one on the left in the picture. When I ordered a replacement and received the one on the right, I was quite surprised.

After having ordered and received an 87139-YZZ08 for my cabin filter needs, I decided to go ahead and order an 87139-YZZ10. The YZZ10 is grey because it contains charcoal. However, it definitely has more pleats than the YZZ08. Here's a pic:

There were some threads a while back in which folks were complaining that the "fan" was not pushing enough air in the cabin. Could it be that the original air filters were too restrictive? New ones let more air in? Just a thought.

Hmm. Good question. I'm not entirely sure on that one. I never had a problem with the air circulation with the original filter and didn't notice any sort of appreciable change to it with the YZZ08 filter.

Jaker, how much was the YZZ10 filter? Weird timing, as I came here to post that I personally verified the new YZZ08 is not the same as comes in the trucks new. Yesterday I was temted to buy the YZZ08 and walk out to one of the 4Runners on the lot and switch them out.

Went by AutoZone and the only cabin filters they had were STP and the one they had in the computer was not a fit. Too thin and too long.

$26.95 online.

You should be able to ask your local dealership to match it. If they don't, just order online.
