Changing Lock/Unlock behaviour

So my truck came with the default setting of locking all doors when the gear selector is moved out of "Park". I don't mind that so much, but I would like it to unlock again when I put it back in "Park". The manual suggests that this can be changed by the owner by following a fairly simple procedure.

1. Insert key and turn to the ON position
2. Within 10 seconds press and hold the rear of the power lock key for 5 seconds while the selector is in the "Park" position.
3. When released, locks should cycle once to indicate that the setting has been changed.

Simple right? Can't for the life of me get it to work. Any gotchas I may be missing?

It took me a few times, but you have to get it 5 seconds exact. I just looked at the second mark on the clock and counted five flashes. Just follow the directions and time it really well and you'll get it.

I've got mine to lock when shifted out of P and unlock when shifted into P. I got tired of having to unlock the car everytime I shut it off.

When the rig "gets" it, you will hear the lock/unlock engage by itself. That tells you that the car has recogonized the change. Hope this helps.

BTW, if I recall, I think I held down the lock/unlock button before putting in the key.

I remember when I tried progamming it, I finally got it to take after shifting it out of P. You know when it accepts the programming. The locks unlock and lock.

Closed all the doors, turned the key to ON, pressed the button, counted, and let go. The locks cycled and now I have doors that unlock.

Yes, those 5 second have to be timed from a watch with a second hand! Thanks for the info guys, worked like a charm,

That's how I did it too. I set it so that it would lock the doors when I went over 15 and unlock them when I threw it back in park. I like it so far...

get in , close all doors, turn ignition key to ON, hold down unlock button for 5 secs and voala.... the locking mechanism , locks and unlocks to confirm.. and now it'll lock in gear and unlock in park.... :goinposta

NOW, HOW do you get all doors to unlock using the keyless entry pad they give you with your 4runner.. i am so tired of having to push the button two times to get it unlocked to open the rear hatch... any ideas? thanks

I got an aftermarket alarm that will send 2 pulses when it disarms and all the doors unlock with 1 push of the button works great

Go to the dealer you got it from, they have to reprogram it there using their scan tool. Should be free.

Ya know, i went to the dealer after day TWO of owning my 4rnr.. and they said they couldn't change it... so, now what, go to a different toyota dealer? that is what i am thinking... i don't want to have to get an alarm just to have that open and close work the way i want it to... (aside from supposed benefits from having an alarm, i have been broken into about 4 times, bottom line, if they want it bad enough, they'll get it)

Yeah go to another dealer. They can do it, they just don't know how. Talk to the service manager, I think he is the only one who can use the tool to do it (at least that's how it was at my dealer). Took him 5 minutes.

If the next dealer says they cannot do it, show them the manual - it clearly states this is something the dealer can change for you.
