Changing Outside Temp from F to C On Display

I'll be looking forward to your response, it will be interesting to see if another dealer can fix the problem. I'm still reading in F.

My 4Runner was a US based vehicle that I brought over and was wondering how to change from imperial measures to metric measures.....any magic for the digital odometer or does that require a complete swap?.....looking forward to some answers....

odometer/temp conversions

For whatever it is worth-- we live in Canada and my husband has a 2004 Chrysler Pacifica (which he really loves).

One of his car's greatest assets is that you can convert the digital odometer/temperature readouts from miles to kilometers and fahrenheit to celsius at the touch of a button. (The speedometer is also automatically adjusted!) We do a lot of travelling in the U.S. and it really is quite helpful.

That would be one feature Toyota could add to the 4Runner that would be appreciated by all of us who frequently drive back and forth across the Canadian/U.S. border!

OK, Boris, I heard this too today from my dealer's service manager...it is a customization that has to be set by computer. Will take it in Friday and give it a shot!! Will let you know!

Well, it was in the shop for 6 hours to 1. program new remote, and 2. change the thermometer display from F to C.

I left with a functioning new remote and thermometer on F, lol. The service manager told me that the display unit was malfunctioning, and was not receiving messages from the computer to reset to a C display. He ordered a new display unit and we will try again next week.

To be continued... :dancin:

odometer/temp conversions

Shimajilosan I'm anxiously waiting to here the outcome. I'm truly stunned that a first rate automaker like Toyota would not make switching form us/metric as simple as pushing a button. The Cougar my dad had 20 years ago could do this. I think its just Toyota's way of not giving you everything they got. Hopefully you can extract some info. from the dealer that we can take to our, it would be nice to know if the odometer could also be changed. Thanks.

My Camry has the button to convert from English to metric. I have no idea why Toyota didn't include it in the 4Runner.

You Can't Get There From Here

When we last saw our intrepid hero, he had been told that changing from F to C was a computer customization setting, but his display unit was not responding to the commands....

My T4R spent yesterday in the shop to get a new display unit and Celsius readout customization. When I got in and turned the key, the temperature display was in ...... F.

I said "Huh?!?!?" The technician was summoned. I said "you did nothing!!!!" He said the display unit was indeed faulty and he replaced it. "But..." I said, "...you are missing the point. The whole reason it was in here was to change from F to C!!!!!"

Guess what the reply was...."You can't do that." He went on to dutifully explain that display units on T4Rs shipped to the US are designed to read in F..only. My response was, of course...." 3 weeks ago it was a computer customization issue -- what changed?" After going back and fortha few times on this, he did promise to call California and ask them. (is that where the Toyota service Gods in the US are?) He has not yet returned my call from this morning.

NOW, totally frustrated, I bitch to my fiance in Japan. She drives a Toyota (Porte) and is on good terms with the folks in her local Toyopet, so she makes a few calls and gets the ichiban of this stuff in Japan.

Are you on the edge of your seats?!?!?

My local technician was close....the environmental sensors installed on vehicles for the US market transmit data in US metrics, such as Farenheit. (There are others apparently.) So the display unit is designed to read in F, because the sensors are designed to transmit only in F.

Think of 2 mercury thermometers...one has scales for C and F on either side, one has only the F scale. My Land Rover was like the first one, and I could change the display with a switch. The US T4R only has a F scale readout. Period end of story.

If I learn any more I will edit this, but it looks like a closed book on the F to C display change.

All hope is lost

AHHHHHHHHHHHHH!!!! I had a glimmer of hope there for a few weeks. Thanks for all your trying, if anything changes please let us know.

Mike :(

Shimajilosan - So inorder to do this we would have to change the temp. sensor and/or change the display module or would it be a computer module somewhere. What I'am thinking is keeping a look out for a 03+ that has been wrote off, but we would need to know if it is one particular part or a combination of.

I beg to differ... To change the setting, it is hard coded into the cluster. (Odd I know) But I have tried. My fathers 4Runner is from US, and the cluster and all the displays are in Imperial.. I have a 4Runner in Canada. For shits and giggles I swapped clusters to see what would happen..

The center display which shows MPG or L/100km and Temperature changed.

After more research, there is a chip on the cluster 93C66, which holds odometer information and REGIONAL coding. The regional coding is what controls the Imperial or Metric display.

BTW, this is for 03+ 4Runners, not sure about prior ones.

CLUSTER

So if I'm understanding you correctly it is the cluster that needs to be changed? I'm in Canada but I picked my 4Runner up in the US, it would be nice to have it in metric but I'am getting use to the US measurements.

If you change the cluster, (From US) to a Canadian Cluster, everything will change to Canadian measurements.

from:

F to C
MPG to L/100
Miles to KM (given)

Hope?!

OK...whats a "cluster"? Are you referring to the "multi display unit"? Is that a hardware change, or a computer change to that chip?
Thanks!

OK I can deal with that There is a way to change it that is the main thing. The down side is that it is not cheap I presume. Like I mentioned earlier maybe I can find one from a right off vehicle. THANKS!!!!!!!!!!!

Cluster, the piece which has your gauges in it (Odometer, Speedometer, Temperature, Gas Gauge)

There is a easier way,....

BUT, your cluster will read KM (odometer)... and will confuse the crap out of Toyota service, since your gauge is in MPH...

If you take apart your cluster, the chip is 93C66, which holds Odometer information, as well as regional coding.

You have to remove the chip, re-program it, and re-install. But since you are tampering with the chip (it has this blue epoxy like substance on it) you risk the chance of being accused of Odometer fraud, since it is the same chip..

This is interesting. So, instead of replacing the US cluster with a Canadian one, you are saying one can reprogram the chip. I for one would still need a tech to do any of this, whether it is replace the cluster with a Canadian one, or do this tear down which really doesn't seem easier.

As much as I want to have the C temp on the display unit, seems like the work (and maybe expense?)required to do that goes way beyond what is reasonable. I think my solution is to install a separate digital compass/temp unit...I want the compass anyway, and most have the temp function -- that can display metric.

Thanks jOmama & MB
