Changing rear differential gasket

Try using some steel wool or sandpaper medium grit. I used sandpaper on mine and it was shining afterwards. In the process of doing my clutch and I started using steel wool to clean things up and now that would be my preference. Either one should work though.

What would medium grit sand paper be? I've just been terrified to scratch it up and it not be usable.

I'm no expert but you have nothing to worry about. Just go to your local hardware store and ask for medium grit or as I mentioned earlier use steel wool. Spray on some brake cleaner or degreaser and scrub away all the debris. If you're going to use FIPG I'd make it look like new.

I have some permatex gear oil RTV. Thanks for the info.. It was a very frustrating day.

My rear diff was oozing around the gasket a while back. Thankfully, retightening all the nuts to 18 ft/lb per the FSM took care of that. This thread is duly noted for future reference.

Nice easy fix!

My breather valve was most likely the culprit. Even though I did the diff breather mod as part of the bearing replacement and brake shoes I cleaned up the old valve by letting it soak in brake cleaner over night. The cap was now able to spring up and down again but when I tried to blow air thru, it was a no go. This mod is definitely a must!

In retrospect I could have just did the mod, cleaned up the oil that made it passed the oil seal and see what happens before changing the brake shoes.
