Hi, I might have to replace the charcoal canister on my 2000 SR5 with v-6 and was wondering if the vsv for evap and pressure come attached to the canister as well as the service port and vacuum hoses, or is it just the canister and I would have to purchase the vsv stuff separately. Thanks Michael

Not sure if the canister on my 99 is the same as a 2000, but mine came with the VSV.

I have to replace mine as well, but mine is different from all the ones I find for some reason. Its different than the 96-00 i guess. :ybrick:

My 02 came with everything on the canister including all hoses. It was a dealer part, so I don't know if the few aftermarket are the same.
There is another VSV in the engine compartment on the driver's side fender that will throw it's own code.
My charcoal canister was replaced almost 4 years ago, then the VSV about a year later. Truck still reported "a small leak" and threw 440, 442 and 446 codes. Took it to the dealer to diagnose the problem and it was the "ORV" or check valve on the top of the gas tank. Had them replace it and all is well after 5+ years of clearing codes...
$500 is a lot of money for a charcoal canister if that isn't the culprit. I'd make sure it's the problem first.

Thanks for the info. That's what I needed. I had the P0446 and after checking the VSVs and canister, it turned out the canister had a small leak in it. I fixed it with JB weld and we'll see how that holds up. The VSVs checked out fine. My part at the online deal is about $230.

how is this stuff checked? i have an 01 and there is a gas smell all the time while engine is running. i have checked for leaks and all is dry. i have had P0442 a few times over a few months period but that's it. i don't want to go to the dealer for the check up but if i have to i will.

Did you ever end up getting to the bottom of your gas smell? I am having the same issue where I am getting a gas smell whenever the engine is running. I am not that competent with vehicles and am really not sure what to do. I'd prefer to have some idea of what might be causing it so if I take it to a shop they wont tear me a new one spending time checking every single part of the vehicle.
Solution to resolve your small evap leak, gas smell, P0442 on 4runners
As the 3rd gen 4runners are aging, more vehicles will encounter these problems. I spent many hours to get to the bottom of this issue.
Solution to small evap leak, P0442, fuel smell at the rear driver side of the vehicle:
1) charcoal canister (can be confirmed with a smoke test). Part cost = $300 to $400.
2) overfill or also called check valve on top of the fuel tank is leaking (small leak cannot be detected by the smoke machine, typically about 0.040 or less size leak). Part cost under $100.
3) filler neck can be rusted & leak if you're in heavily snow regions. Part cost, I think $200.
Some mentioned replacing the gas cap, but I haven't seen this to be an issue unless it's been dropped or the seal gasket is cracked.
If check engine light (CEL or MIL) is ON, your VSC & Traction will also be ON or those functions are disabled. Vehicle drives fine until you need an annual inspection. You'll also experience slipping and sliding in wet or snow surface until you clear the CEL.
