Check Engine, and Both VSC Lights ON

As I'm sure all you know there was a snowstorm that hit the east coast last week and being the only one of my friends in town with a 4wd (plus a love of driving in snow).
I drove everyone around and tore up some parking lots but the other day I started my 4runner up (04 SR5 V6 117,000 miles) and these three lights kicked on. However after turning the 4hi back to 2wd and switching it back, the lights went away like nothing even happened.
Should I be concerned or was it maybe just a random occurrence?
PS. I did have it in 4wd with the rear diff lock on for 3 and half days straight prior to the lights coming on

I know it sound crazy but it is likely a bad gasket on your gas cap, or the gas cap is not fully tightened.

Same thing happened to me. I happen to have an OBD II reader so I googled the code it was throwing and researched from there. Same thing happened on my wife's 2013 Subaru ( Man did that dash LIGHT up!!). IIRC if it not fully tightened and you re-tighten it might take a few engine start / stop cycles to reset the error code. However, a new gas cap is cheap.

you know my idiot self just remembered I checked my gas cap and it was loose and the lights went off two starts later so from all the rough riding on the ice and snow it might've knocked it loose. After having 5 days off for the snow and drinking all those 5 days I had forgotten about the gas cap. but I appreciate the response!

I've got this same problem; however, the gas cap has been replaced. These lights come and go randomly, and the cause can't seem to be found...it's very frustrating

same thing happened to me one winter. I was doing some donuts in a parking lot then my dash lit up like a Christmas tree. my guess is a bunch of snow and ice got kicked up some where. after a day of defrosting all the lights turned off.
years later I found that if I filled my gas tank up and went on a long drive involving a big change in altitude, same thing. I replaced the gas cap and its been good since.

it might be related to too much air/moisture

Yeah many donuts were done. All I did was tighten the gas cap and then went a filled up my tank and the next start it was back to normal so hopefully that was all it was

mine ended up just being a gas cap but I had had issues with my vac lights coming on and had to do the zero point calibration which was actually really easy with 2 straightened paper clips and a youtube video. How was where you live in virginia affected by the snow? Virginia Beach got over 14inches it was great

I would say if it's the original gas cap that the rubber O ring is just getting very hard from the extreme cold and age thus not sealing well enough so that maybe the reason the cap became loose during your snow adventure antics!

I would replace it if it were mine.

Do you have the V8 or V6? Run over to an Advanced Auto Parts store to see if they can check the codes for you to give you an idea.

Similar thing happened to me recently. Very cold start one morning and CEL/VSC/Trac lights all came on. Replaced the gas cap and pulled the negative terminal off the battery for a few minutes. Started back up and all lights have been off since.

Read some comments on here that if your turn your gas cap right until it clicks then turn back left again, if there is no resistance when you are turning back left it’s likely the cap. (Which is how mine was)

Also read that a very cold start can throw a code as well. Can’t say for certain but both of those applied in my situation!

We didn't get that much - only about 5 inches here so just enough to make things slick on the roads from the thawing/re-freezing :lookout:

I have a V6 - and the problem is, the lights are off/on so randomly! So I'll start it up one morning, planning on taking it in to get the codes checked, and they'll go off by the time I finish work??

The first time I had this checked out was by the dealer, and they said there were no codes from the engine light. It's so frustrating!

Huh. That is odd. I was going to say it might be the Secondary Air Injection System if it was a V8, but with the V6 the same thing happened to my dad's '05 V6 and it turned out to be the gas cap. Could also be cold weather, too. Heard that with really cold weather it can trigger those lights.

I had the same lights come on on my '05 V8, but that ended up being the Secondary Air Injection Pumps

Engine code

Ok, so I was finally able to get the code read - my brother in law owns a body shop and had a computer on hand while he replaced my rear door handle (the one that melted).

It's code P0016, Camshaft Position A - Camshaft Position Correlation (Bank 1).

This doesn't sound good!!

Not saying it's not but on my son's 05 this has happened twice & both times thru slush & snow &ice , mud & rain ! This is IMO that the abs sensor at the wheel gets frozen or wet or whatever & pops the xmas tree , but within cpl days go away . Now I did the zpc & cleared right up but last yr when son drove to school it happened in Nm & he drove thru to Colo. & it sat for cpl days went away on own so............:sleepy:maybe it is & maybe just that sensor is very sensitive to wet/frozen conditions !!!! IDK:hatsoff:

I pulled 2 p0138 & p0606 < is ecm module so you see all kinds of codes get thrown out when IMO it was something to do with the abs sensor getting either wet, frozen or whatever . 1st time I
T /Resolved itself this last time 2 weeks ago I zpc'd it ! The drivers side abs was full of water ! No problems since :usa:

Just had my Buddy pull Codes as my Check Engine and Both VSC lights on. Yeah PO430. Bad Cat. Maybe check Sensors 1st to make sure its Bad Cat or Bad sensor. :fear:

I was told that the timing belt needs to be replaced, so hopefully this will take care of it. ray:
