Cigarette lighter not responding

Alright. So i have what can be best described as a poorly maintained stock 98 that on my college income i am slowly trying to fix up. My latest problem is while moving states the cigarette lighter crapped out.

I checked the ACC fuse and it is working. a/c and stereo both work. (clock doesnt, but anyone who owns a 98 knows that) the 12v port in the back by the gate is also functional.

This metal part detached itself, and when i slide it back in, the connection doesnt establish. here are some pictures to help explain

One of the connections on the back of the cigarette lighter might have come undone...you can pop that black bezel (the one that surround it, radio, A/C controls, etc) relatively easily. If I am not mistaken there are 2 push-on connections on the back of that. One might have come off somehow...although once on there they are usually pretty snug.

I believe there is also a fusible link built into the socket connection at the base, between the hot spade and the center electrode. If there were better focus, I could be sure (see that wire running from the top around the right and bottom to the spade lug--that could be fried). In any case, checking continuity between the spade lugs and the case/center electrode would be worthwhile. Then verify 12V+ and ground at the feed wires. You will then know if problem is socket or wiring/fuses.

ok. that was extra technical and im lost. first, if it is the socket can i order a new one and place it in?

second, what am i looking to reconnect the push ons to on the socket? is that what covers the prongs?

I believe they are "L" shaped and there should be 2 on each power point I think.

Yeah, there's just a blue L shaped connector that needs to be plugged back in. Remove the center console and bezel and simply reconnect it.

Sorry, I didn't realize you were hoping to reconnect it by just sticking it back in the hole--read too fast. That won't work. The others are right, just find the wire connector plug and put it back on. You might even be able to fish it out of the hole without taking the center dash out--look through the hole with a flashlight. (I am assuming it is a single L-shaped connector with two wires--I don't remember exactly, however). If that doesn't work, report back and we can troubleshoot further.

Similar problem

In a 92 Toyota Pickup. Identical cigarette lighter socket.

Except I was able to isolate the problem: it's the cigarette lighter socket itself. Using VOM, I learned there's still current running in the 12v L-shaped plug.

Problem is I haven't been able to find a suitable replacement for the cigarette lighter socket. All searches online bring up sockets that do not accomodate the L-shaped Tyoyta 12v plug. I guess I could just solder some wire to the correct contacts, but until I've exhausted myself looking for the right part, I'd rather not.

This thread is funny in a strange way.

My lighter socket pulled out a few days ago, and I got around to messing with it yesterday.

The wired L shaped connector gave me fits to get a hold of!!

I also checked the fusible link wire on the socket and all is good now.
