Cigarette lighter / Power Supply

I recently bought a cheap electric tire pump that plugs into the cigarette lighter for when i'm on the road and need to quickly pump up the tires.

I noticed that when connected to the back plug and the tire hose is connected, it makes a weird noise and doesn't have the oomph to do anything. Unplug it, take the key out and put it back and turn it to on and plug it in the center console plug, it works fine. I already blew the power supply 7.5 amp fuse, but it appears to have gone due to me using it in the back plug.

Any idea on why the back one would give me an issue yet the center console works just fine?

Pop the rear one out and check the connections and socket itself. It sounds pretty much like a bad ground or connection.

What's the current draw on that compressor? Even the small ones will pull over 10A under load (once you actually start airing up the tire). I've got a small Viair model and it behaves similarly. They ran really tiny wire to both the front and rear power ports. The additional wire running to the rear is just more voltage drop. The compressor is probably kind of starved for power.

You're really better off if you can to pick up one of the adapters with big battery clamps to a heavy duty power port. It's kind of a pain to pop the hood just to run your compressor but you won't have these power issues any more. Better yet, just hack that connector off and put clamps right on your power cable.
