Clear Coat Failure

The clear coat and paint is gone on my hood. I’ve been looking for a k73 millennium silver hood in Oregon or Washington if anyone has one.

I love my 4runner. I love it because its easy to work on and I pride myself in knowing with 240,000 miles she is mechanically 95%. I love it cause its fun to drive and I feel like a kid every time I drive it. I love it cause it does everything I need it to (except pull loads, but see my sig for that). But most of all, I love it cause I dont give two shits if she gets scratched from bushes, dinged from shopping carts, or one more piece of clearcoat flies off.

Just my opinion on my favorite vehicle of all time. (I keep the interior flawless fyi)

^^^ this. Exactly my sentiment and well said. I’d add that I love that it takes a special breed to understand this and understand why I enjoy driving my truck with flaked clearcoat but it is so dialed in.

I don't think there's many 20+ year old cars that you won't see issues with the paint if it wasn't taken care of. Especially if it is a darker shade in an area with a lot of sun.

I've waxed all of the cars I've owned 2x a year. Sort of engrained from working in a detail shop in HS. Never had an issue with paint fading.

My 97 (desert dune) has zero clear coat issues. Spent most of its life in WI but also spent 7 years in AZ. My truck has almost never seen a garage either. I wish my Camry/Highlander paint/clear coat was even remotely as good as my 3rd gen.

My '97 ( desert dune) is the same, clear coat and paint are perfect.

Desert Dune clear coat quality is ridiculously good, even compared to Millennium silver or Thundercloud. Haven't seen an original finish example with failing clear or heavy oxidation. Very low maintenance finish IMO. Never was a particularly interesting color to me, but after ending up with one I can say that it's easy to keep nice.

I have a 2005 4Runner in Salsa Red and the clear coat is peeling off the hood, roof and mirror tops. I got a quote from a body shop for $2800 and from the dealer for $3000.

I'm not going to get it done. It doesn't affect form, fit or function- just looks bad. I can live with that.

I'm really surprised that so many colors of Toyota's are having the clear coat peeling problem. You'd think that Toyota would fix the problem instead of ignoring it.

It's a cosmetic issue that occurs after ten years.. it isn't Toyota's problem.

Def not a Toyota quality issue when compared to other brand auto's. 96Red's clear coat was like new for 17 yrs 3K4 sunfire red mica think it's called, SE area for life parked outside. Waxed 2-4 times a year washed often. Had 04 G35 by 07 had to cut n buff clear coat, Nissan's paint sux.
