Clear coat flaking

I have a blue 08 4runner. Clear coat is peeling of the front bumber, back bumper and right rear wheel flare. Anybody ever had this happen? Any suggestions? How do the cans of clear coat work from Auto zone? really don't want to spend $$ on new paint.

My suggestion? Watch this video and fix it yourself. Maybe wait for it to warm up a bit. I fixed some last year on my fender flares, now gotta do the roof and grill this summer.

Don't use the auto zone clear coat. Buy 2k clear coat, unless that is you plan on getting rid of the truck pretty soon.

Same color, same problem. It drives me insane. Mines mainly on my fender flares on the right side, I think I’m going to wet sand them down and just spray more clear on them. Will this work? I’m not very knowledgeable at auto body stuff.

I have a silver 2003, and have it bad on all the fender flares. From what I understand it's pretty common on these vehicles. I'll be interested to see what solutions people have, although I'm thinking I may just have the whole vehicle repainted depending on what kind of condition it's in 2-5 years from now.

I think silver is the worst. My 2005 fender flares are partly white instead of silver. I may need to either live with it or repaint the whole truck. To touch it up would mean complete prep and paint of fender flares, bumpers, and lower door panels. The paint on metal parts looks great.

I just color matched some of my trim and used for my color 1e9 spray paint with a 2k spray clear and it turned out really well. I've seen videos where people painted entire panels that way so I would imagine it would be relatively easy to do on the fender flares. the 2k clear was about 12 a can and the color matched paint was 34.

Wonderful luck for us, having silver! Mine are pretty well white too, but not a nice white at all! The plastic panels on my doors are also fairly beat up from the previous owner as well as the liftgate, so I really am torn on what to do. I think I'll leave it a little ugly for now until I can afford a proper solution.

I'll have to look into that! Issue with spray is it could turn out awesome or terrible, I should definitely practice more. RC car bodies are quite a different ball game from automotive panels!

Plasti-diped mine

I went the plasti-dip route with the finder flares and rear bumper. Got the whole dip your car kit. I had some damage done to the rear bumper corner that was paid out by the offending parties insurance, so that covered the cost.

But now I've got clear coat flaking off on the roof right at the door edge (mostly just the driver door). Not as bad as in the pictures above, but enough to be noticeable. I'll have to try some of the suggested fixes.

I have a Silver '06 that has some bad peeling on the front bumper (likely a sh*tty paint job by a PO) as well as am starting to get some fading and flaking on my fender flares ...

Anybody ever thought about Linexing their whole 4Runner (http://www.linex.com/specialty-automotive)? I know I've seen posts on doing the bumpers/trim and even hood ... but dont think Ive seen anyone do everything. I've been toying with the idea, but its expensive and itd be great to get first hand feedback about it.

I've got massive amounts of clearcoat failure on my black 4th gen. I had a LineX estimate done for the whole vehicle and it was around 2k, almost as much as a quick, crappy paint job. I would have had to pull them off the body so it would look right as well. YMMV...

I'm living with it for now...may have to eventually do the rattle can clear coat job.

Clear Coat Failure ???

New Member here in the market for a 4th gen. I'm hoping to buy something that I will have for 5-10 years. But I want it to look good. Are there certain 4th gen colors more prone to clear coat failure?

I bought an 05 Prius back in 2015. Looked good at first, but within months the clear coat went to crap! Looked terrible. Don't want to make that mistake again if I can avoid it!

I think its cars that are left out in the sun too much. Although, we get rust in the north east, not much in the way of clear coat issues.

Im not sure certain colors have more issues- they all should go through the same process of prepping the body, primer, paint and clear coat. Certainly, youre less likely to notice on white than other colors. Just have to look and see what condition its in when you buy it and try to wax and keep it out of the sun for long periods of time

After my Prius clear coat started going bad, I noticed so many maroon Prius had pealing clear coat. I ended up getting a grey Prius and the clear coat was solid, I haven't seen may gray Prius with peeling clear coat. Could be a coincidence or maybe certain colors are more likely prone to failure?

Yea I guess theoretically dark colors would heat up more and more likely to melt the clear coat so to speak. I’ve had an 03 galactic grey and 08 black and no issues

My '08 Driftwood Pearl is getting really bad. Been outside most its life, but will be selling my Mustang to make room in garage. Any recent estimates on a new paint job out there? Whole 4Runner will need re-paint Driftwood Pearl.

Where did you get the 1e9 from? I see many places say they have exact match but mixed reviews
