close friends 98 v6 runner has burned valve socal

so one of my close friends, pastor who married my wife and I, has a 98 v6 which apparently has a burned valve. will need haeds rebuilt at least. any suggestions for good/reliable shops?

My advice don't do a rebuild. Period.

Do a search on here for rebuild and you will hear conflicting things but usually they go like this ...
"Hey I bought a truck and now a few months / years later it runs all F'd up. I think the previous owner did a rebuild several (like 2-3) years ago and it was running fine when I bought it."

First off, most rebuilds cost $3500-$4000 and ALWAYs use aftermarket parts. Sure it will come with a 12 mo warranty but that will do little good one it breaks down 2 years later.

I'd suggest an engine swap. Do a search here on the forum.

Also, a and this is most important, you really don't know what is wrong so take it a good shop that knows Toyotas.

he's in vista...I used to live in oside.

any specific suggestions would be great...I've gone both routes in the past...had shops rebuild or drop in used engine but I live in north idaho so I cant help him as much as I'd like to.

Only way to know for sure is to do a compression/leakdown test. If he had this done then most likely they are right.

I agree he should do a motor swap with a good low mileage used motor.. Find a good donor motor from a running totaled 4runner, purchase, and have one of the toyota shops do the swap. I would have the new motor compression/leakdown checked before purchase also.
