Clunk noise

Need some help diagnosing a noise. It was noticed after I finished my lift and had it aligned. All parts seem to be tight and I double checked the LCA bolts. It happened anytime I come to a quick stop or go over a decent size bump as some drive ways have by the street side. I'm at a loss. Thanks in advance. The lift consists of Toytec coilovers, 5160 rear shocks, SAW coils in the rear and JBA off-road UCAs. Noise was only heard after last alignment. https://vimeo.com/186483395

I'm having that exact same noise going on, from what I can tell it is coming from the front drivers side. My 4runner is actually in the shop that did the install today, so I will hopefully have an answer for you COB today...

Lots of threads on here about this topic. Usually, it’s the LCAs not torqued enough to spec., or the KDSS sway bar connect (which it looks like you have). But I’ve had the “clunk” since week 1 (that I can remember); does it backing out of/down my driveway, etc., and it doesn’t seem to matter any at all in the long run (I’m almost at 40K miles)...mjust more of an annoyance than anything.

Use Google to find “5th gen 4runner clunk” and/or similar wording.... you’ll find a bunch of results.

Good luck.

I've checked a bunch of threads on the topic, just not in a day or 2. I did check the LCA bolts and did have to tighten them. I didn't have a torque wrench that goes that high, but I got quite a bit of torque on them. Still does it. As for the KDSS, that was another that I've seen. I checked and I'm not sure where it could even contact anything. I have tons of room around it and currently have the factory front skid off driving around. I did just pull in to a parking lot and heard the same clunk as I turned left and pull in to a spot if hat changes anything.

So I just talked to the guys at RSG and they told me there were a few components with the Toytec Boss Kit and UCA's that to be tightened... Generally you want to do this after the first few hundred miles of installing it.

Once they are finished I will have a better idea of what exactly needed to be tightened and get back to you. But I am willing to bet you have the same exact problem as me, it sounds pretty much identical to what I was experiencing...

BTW you a crew chief or what?

Thank you. I'll recheck things when I get home. Yes please let me know what they say. I'm very interested especially with all the thread that are similar like this.

Haha! Don't insult me like that. Kidding kidding. No, I'm flightline hydraulics.

Ahh, you must be AF? Maybe? I was an Army aircraft powerplant mechanic before I reclassed to flight paramedic...

Anyway I just got off the phone with those guys and they told me the noise I was hearing was in fact the UCA's needing to be tightened again.. So I am hoping after I pick it up I will no longer be hearing that clunking noise...

Still chasing after this issue myself.. what on the UCA needing to be tightened? The heim joint on the ends, or ball joint on the wheel side?

Also curious why we all seem to have it on the driver side, but not the passenger side. If it was a tightening question, I would think we would see reports from the passenger side (statistical spread).

I get it consistently:
  1. When the front wheel drop from the garage slab onto the driveway (about a 1 inch drop); No turning)
  2. when I turn off my driveway and come off the curb.
  3. Sharp left turns.
  4. Occasionally on a right hand turn (usually after a left turn clunk)

I'm on a Icon stage 6 with Overland springs. The original installation had no clunk that I remember. After my last two alignments, it's still there. I don't have the specsheet of my last 2 alignments (don't know WHY shops don't print these off by default!).

Okki

Yes, I'm AF. You must enjoy the flying than. That's good stuff.

I'll have to check them in the morning. My LR UCAs on my Tacoma had been loose and I could move them by hand. These on the runner feel nice and tight. But I'll check with a wrench. Which UCAs do you have?

It's very strange. I've spent an hour or 2 now under the truck looking for even the slightest mark that something hitting. I'm lost. It's funny though, I'm now getting it when I turn left from a stop to go.

Yeah man, like I said I havent actually picked it up from the shop yet, so I am hoping that its not one of those things where I'm good for a couple days then start hearing the clunking noise again :wow2:... They just told me the UCA's needed to be tightened, don't know specifically what it was that they tightened. I can call back tomorrow and ask what exactly they meant.

Gonna put my 2cents in if it hasn't already been touched. But I would suspect that it is your spring and it is hitting the shock body. to correct this you will need to pull the shock and make sure that the spring is set correctly in the shock. As me how I know and how I fixed it? Same sound everything tightened. Took it off like above made sure that the spring was set correctly and no more noise. Had a little rubbing on the shock itself.

Disregard as I just went back and reread the original post and it was after an alignment. I would gather that it is most likely a loose bolt somewhere, myself. I would go and make sure everything is torqued correctly before continuing further.

I know this is probably way off the wall but I was chasing a creak/ clunk for some time and it was annoying as anything. long story short after taking it back to dealership after 30k svc and Firestone after alignment (i do them at the same time) there was nada...

Got home the other day and got my neighbor to hang on slider and jump up and down.... it was the hood latch making the noise... lil grease and GONE FINALLY!!!

Not sure if this is your problem or not but thought i'd share.

That's crazy. Funny how it's the littlest things sometimes.

Thanks for the link. That was one of the threads I had read though. I've checked the bolts and tightened twice. I must not be putting enough in to it. Guess I need to go buy a bigger torque wrench because that is 100% the exact same thing and sound mine is doing.

Sure thing and yes, they require quite a bit of torque (spec'd for 129 ft.*lbf.) You should be careful not to over-torque as well. If you read my post in that thread, I eventually bought a new bolt and nut because the existing hardware wouldn't maintain a proper torque and the click would return. I can't be sure, but upon installing my OME kit, I hastily read the spec sheet and over-torqued to 175 ft-lb on my drivers side. The click began relatively soon after. After too much head scratching and re-tightening, I put the new hardware in, torqued to 129 and have been click-free since!

Good luck and let us know what your fix is [emoji106]

Absolutely and thanks again. I'm going to buy a bigger torque wrench in a few and see what I come up with later. I've already been checking out the Moog LCA bolts with the grease zerks.
