A week or so ago my truck started howling when sitting in neutral. I figure the throw out bearing is on its way out from gently dragging on the pressure plate fingers even with the pedal fully extended. Clutch operates fine. No issues getting in to gear, shifts smoothly, doesnt slip or chatter. Applying even light pressure to the clutch pedal makes the noise disappear.
I do have a new throw out bearing to install, just finding excuses to delay dropping the transmission right now =D I'm wondering though how I can fix the problem of the slave cylinder not retracting enough and keeping the clutch fork engaged (even if just barely enough to run the throw out bearing on the pressure plate fingers). The stock clutch I changed a few years ago now died in a similar manner. No noise from bearings but it had a hop when trying to slip the clutch and when I got it out I had 10 of 15 fingers left.
The clutch engages very near the top of the pedal. I don't see any way to adjust the "free play". The adjustment of clevis/push rod at the master does nothing more than change the height of the pedal. Unless I'm mistaken, I don't see any way to change the engagement point of the clutch. I'm currently leaning towards shortening the push rod on the slave cylinder and adding a helper spring to help retract the clutch fork. Thoughts or suggestions?
I have done a bit of searching and this squeak is quite common. It also seems older cruisers had an adjustable slave push rod and some guys were adding helper springs as well. I just don't really feel like replacing the throw out bearing to have it constantly drag and die again.
