There are two things that you can count on in Texas: Rapidly changing weather and hot summers. The month of August seems to be one of the tamest on the first category, but one of the most brutal in the second. In many places around our state, the wind blowing means that you are just getting cooked from a different direction. Outside activities become less appealing for most of us. However, there are many of us who are getting cabin fever around that time from long hours at work and not enough play time. I have found a solution:
Introducing the first annual "Beat the Heat" trip to the Texas coast. Grab your family, your cooler, and your sunblock and lets go where the breeze is cool (or at least not quite so hot). Temperatures at the coast usually stay down in the lower 90s or upper 80s with a constant 15mph breeze off of the Gulf. Overnight temperatures are downright heavenly and the surfing and fishing should be great.
Padre Island National Seashore (PINS) is a real gem with miles of open beach to explore. It is very easy to find a nice secluded place out there to relax. We will be starting at the park on the northern end and travelling to the southern tip of the island, where there is a small channel and world class fishing. The group will remote camp for the entire outing, but camping details and location will be decided by the group when we arrive (I would prefer to camp beyond Big Shell Beach).
This will be a guided trip. The trailside teaching classes will be Sand Driving Techniques, and Sand Extraction. We will also be reviewing Tread Lightly principles for this coastal environment. Heck, I'll teach you how to surf if you bring a longboard!

One added note about PINS: As with any coastal area, there is lots of trash that gets washed ashore. At PINS, its particularly bad in the more remote sections that cleanup crews struggle to reach. Please bring along your Trasharoos and plenty of extra trash bags. As with all CO trips, we intend to leave the land in better shape then we found it. There are large dumpsters at the entrance to the beach, so you will not have to carry the trash all the way home. Roof racks FTW!

•Rugged clothing, appropriate to duration and weather conditions
•Camping gear: for cooking, sleeping, and relaxing
•Food: high-calorie, non-perishable items are best
•Water: one gallon per person, per day, is mandatory
•Maps: digital or paper in road or topo, for region of trip
•Spare key, hidden outside of vehicle
•Portable light source w/ batteries
•Emergency contact, family or friend
•Basic first aid kit
•Cash
RECOMMENDED FOR EVERY TRIP
•Jack
•Tarp
•Shovel
•Jumper cables
•Drivetrain fluids
•Recovery strap
•CB or 2/70 HAM radio
•Tool kit, appropriate to vehicle
•Spare parts, appropriate to vehicle
