Coil Rates: OEM 4runner, OEM FJ, Moog, & Others

Radlfo and Icon seem to be the most popular around here. I think both of them use a ~14" coil, but I'll have to try to confirm that. I'm not sure about the Kind and Fox coilovers, not as many run those around here.

Cool, that was my assumption. They all have to package their coilover in the factory location so they are probably all right around there. That coupled with some available threads above the adjuster means one could possibly get a touch longer spring in there. I think what I am going to do is find a 8'' stroke 2.5'' body coilover and make my own top mount. These can be found realitively cheap used and rebuilding is a piece of cake. Also good used springs like Eibach or King are cheap used too. I just cant spend $1300 on a new pair of coilovers when I know I can piece them together for about half that. I did this with my wifes 05 Chevy Colorado when no one made a bolt in coilover. Super easy.

OP - I really appreciate you gathering all that information together and posting it. It should be a good resource, especially if we can fill in the missing blanks. The thing is (and maybe it's just me) but I think that chart raises more questions then it answers?

I say that because obviously people look to a chart like that to help them pick the right springs for their rig. With that in mind, I think the spring rate info is valuable but what most people are looking for is, If I use spring "X", what should I expect "Y" in the amount of lift.

I don't think you can really deduce that information from that chart? If you compare the OEM T4R springs against say the OME 884's, the spring rate and wire dia. are very similar but the OME's are 1.58" longer. One might see that and assume the OME's will give about a 1.5" lift but the reading I've done seems to indicate that the 884's generally give 2-2.5" of lift?

Very good points, and you are correct. The main purpose of this thread was to point out coil rates between Moog and OEM FJ coils are not the same (this has come up in numerous threads lately). Even though Moog's are a "OEM" replacement, the specs are different and you shouldn't expect the same results (lift height and ride quality) as those running the OEM FJ coils. I then expanded the chart to include a few other common coil choices that I had readily available. I was hoping this would show show the varying coil rates and to help select the right coil if you're adding weight such as a steel bumper. I wasn't really intending on it as a guide for calculating lift height (it would be very difficult to do so with all the lift options out there). I did do something like this for the FJ swap (link in sig if you're interested), and even with just this coil there were a lot of factors to consider, and still only a "guide". Individual results could vary quite a bit.

So, here's a couple examples of how I felt this info would be beneficial:

First example (using rounded numbers for ease of calculation): I'm adding a steel front bumper that weighs 150 pounds. I currently have a 15" spring that's 580 lb / in. To properly support this weight and maintain current height, I need a 15" spring that's 590 lb / in (15" coil X 10 lb /in increase = 150 lbs). This still isn't set it stone, because there are other benefits to an increased spring rate. Folks using the FJ coils which is slightly stiffer agree the ride quality is improved. A stiffer spring would also provide lift, which is why a lot of us make the switch. I'll also say while 10 lb / in may not seem like much, over a 14" or 15" coil it can add up and make a significant difference in height.

Second example: A lot of folks want to run a full OME setup because of their reputation and price. It's a good kit and a good value. The front works very well for most. However, based on the specs of the rear coils, they are probably too stiff for most of us. Unless you have a lot of weight added to the rear (drawer system, steel bumper, tire carrier, etc). Something like the Toytecs, Icons, or All Pros may be a better fit (I've seen a number of folks make this switch after having OME rear coils).

So, this was intended to be used as a general reference to help select the right coil, and not necessarily lift amounts. I've researched this, and the main issue I found is that when people are measuring lift amounts, most measure fender to ground. This measurement is affected by tire size, so the numbers aren't as meaningful. A center of hub to fender measure is much more accurate to determine lift height. I think something like this thread is what you're after, but unfortunately there hasn't been a lot of participation. If there was, maybe someone could organize the results into one post (similar to my FJ swap thread, link in sig).

So since OEM FJ coils paired with Bilstein 5100s seem to be the most popular suspension upgrade, what is the next best option for those wanting to achieve similar results(taking into consideration ride quality and price)?

So if I wanted a 2.5" front lift on a stock (no bumper, winch, extra battery, etc.) '06 V6 4x4 using Blistein 5100's struts (set to 0), which OME spring should I go with, the 883 or 884?

Numbers are all over the place but I've seen a number of posts claiming 3" to 3.5" of lift using the 884 on otherwise stock Gen4 V6 models. Based on that I'm thinking the 883 but most posts I see on the 883 are for Gen3 4runners.

I am thinking the 884's. I have never seen any pictures of the 883 installed. Nor have I read of the 883 being used.

just had the moogs installed...

Last night, I replaced the old xreas system and got Moog 81108 front springs coupled with 5100 adjusted to 1.75 installed in the front, stock rear air springs with the 4600s in the back, and LT 275/65/18 Cooper AT3s as well.
I didn't see this thread until now, so I didn't order OEM FJ springs. The Moogs were a bit cheaper I think, so I went with them.
The Moogs are stiffer than I expected. The ride is stiffer. It rides more like a truck now. Not terrible, but not what I was expecting. Good thing I still have my old WAAG brush guard. I'll probably put it back on to add some weight in the front.
With my new set up, the ground to fender height is about 36.5" on all corners.
I didn't adjust the air bags yet. I think I'm going to wait until the front settles, then make a decision.

Overall, I am happy with the results, even though the moog springs are a bit on the stiff side.

You forgot to update the OME specs... I linked there catalog above for easy reference for you...
also might be worthwhile adding the Sway a way rear 1.5" lift coils... seems like 15.75" free length with 195 lb/in rate, I haven't been able to find the other specs on these rear springs: Sway-A-Way 1.5" Lift Rear Coil Set

What is it that needs updated on the OME specs? Are the numbers wrong, or was there some additional info that needs added? Also, I'll get the Sway-A-Way's added when I'm able to log on with a PC, seems like they might be a good option for a little less lift.

yeah there is no coil bar diameter or free length listed for the rear ome coils on the list and might as well add the 895e's to the chart while you're snooping in the OME catalog... no worries

Thanks! I'll update that as soon as I get a chance to logon from my computer.

Can anyone find the specs for the OME 887 front coil? I heard it has the same spring rate as the 885, but is 5mm taller. Can someone confirm?

Also, anyone running those springs on the site? I'm curious how they ride/look.

Based on the chart, I think the Moog 81088(for TR4 V8) with 5100s set at .85 on the fronts is what I will do for my V6 4WD. I am putting the 5100s on the rear too but cant decide on the best coil. The Moog 81045 for the TR4 are actually a tad shorter than OEM coils according to the chart and coil rate is missing. I would like to stiffen up the ride a little bit and add an inch(not much more) to the rear. So what rear coil set should I go with? I don't know of anyone who has gone with the 81045.

This is the info I had in my file:

Front Coil Free length Spring rate
(mm) (lb/in)
OME 883 375 590
OME 884 390 590
OME 885 395 590
OME 886 400 660
OME 887 400 590 (Prado 150?)
OME 888 405 590 (Prado 150?)

Hope that helps.

HOJeepster the OME catalog is linked in post #2 of this thread. Click it and go to pages 121/122 for the coils.

Moog 81008

So, after reading though this, my stock XREAS is still in good shape. If a replaced the front coils with moog 81088 with a v8 that should give about 1" of lift to front?

I would really like to avoid spacers, but don't want to gut the XREAS yet. Very mild increase but should fit 265/65r18 BGF KOs?

I think those should be good for 1"-1.5" lift (estimate, haven't seen actual numbers). May need a small amount of work to fit those tires, but nothing major.
