Coil Rates: OEM 4runner, OEM FJ, Moog, & Others

Hey OP, thanks for the hard work you put in here. It cracks me up reading all the micro dissection of spring rates by everyone in here. Its like we are making chassis setups for a Nascar cup car or an F-1 car. But with that being said, Im no better then the many in here as Im also ocd when it comes to shock/spring/& bar rates and setups.
I recently updated my setup to include the Toytec/Eibach 2" 620lb front springs. I set the Bilsteins to max lift with no additional spacers up front. In the rear, I chose the OME 895's and the Bilstein 5100's with no spacers. I will agree with some on here, this combo is a little firm when the rig is empty but. I will say this, I chose this package specifically for MY needs. Right now, my T4R handles excellent on the street. We all know how much our oem t4r's floated all over the freeways. Im a sporting type of driver, on and off road. Off road and when I air down the tires, this thing handles like a Rally car on fast powerline roads, small whoops tight twisty stuff ect. Going slow in 4low crawling, yes its a little bit stiff, but only when I have no cargo (off road gear) food, passengers, dogs ect. But again, as long as I air down, which everyone needs to do to let the tires and motor do their jobs and be patient, my rig does everything I have asked it, and does it better than many other types of rigs. I enjoy driving this t4r much more now than before.
The first question I ask my customers when doing a chassis setup is; "what will you be using the vehicle for, and how will you be driving the vehicle on and off road?" Thanks for the hard work and thanks for reading. Happy wheeling@

ARK_SWAMP_RIDER We should probably add the Tundra TRD coils (unknown year) since that is what Sonoran Steel puts in their front suspension kit with Bilstein 5100. I read the Tundra TRD springs are progressive but don't know the rates. It appears Sonoran suggests the springs on the 2.5" setting to handle steel bumper & winch (yields 3.75" lift settled to ~3" w/weight), otherwise use the 1.5" setting to get 3" lift without heavy bumper.

wondering about sequoia rear coils...can't find any info on them either...

Not sure on the Sequoia coils, haven't seen anyone try them.

Do you know if these would be a direct swap? From their site it says they modified the 5100s for the coils. I'm not familiar with the SS kit, not sure if it was modified to fit the coils or maybe just an adjustment collar that was added (similar to Toytec).

From Sonoran Steel's site:
All four shocks are Bilstein 5100 series designed for this specific vehicle which we have further modified to hold the TRD coils we have paired up for the ultimate combo.

Honestly not sure

I recently received my toytec/eibach 620 front springs which i will pair with my 5100's .i plan on running them on the second clip up from the bottom ,and combo with a 1/2" top spacer to get a true 3" or 3.25" (+or-) when i am done.this is with a (on the heavy side) plate bumper and winch.Rear will get a set of icon 2" springs .i will post pics when i'm done . does anyone have any input or pics on a same or similar set-up ?

I've see a lot of discussion regarding the FJ swap and whether or not the Moog FJ coils were a better option than OEM FJ coils. After doing some searching, I've found some of the numbers for the Moog coils, and paired that with some info I already had.

A couple notes:
 1. The measurement for the OEM 4runner front coils is for a V8 4wd. The front coils on a v6 4wd are .2" shorter. 2wd 4runners use a different coil, but so far I haven't found specs on those. All models use the same rear coils.
 2. I couldn't find the spring rate for the front OEM FJ coils. I saw numbers all over the place, ranging from 530 lb / in to 630 lb / in. Most seemed to be in the 550 lb / in range, but from my experience the FJ coils are slightly stiffer than the OEM T4R coils, so that number doesn't add up.
 3. The 540 lb / in number for the Tacoma coils doesn't make sense either. I found the same number in several places (could have been all from the same source) so I posted it. Based on my experience, I'd say the Tacoma coil is stiffer than the FJ.
 4. Some aftermarket coils only show the % increase over stock, so I tried to calculate the spring rate. These numbers are in dark blue and in bold.

It's hard to compare the OEM FJ to Moog FJ coils since I don't have all the numbers. What I can tell is that front Moog FJ coils have the same spring rate as the OME 886 coils, which is very stiff. If I were to order Moog coils, I'd order the 4runner version (v6 or v8 depending on how much lift you want) for the front. I can't say on the rear since Moog did not provide the coil rate for those. I'd expect a minimum of 1" lift in the rear with the Moog coils based on the height. My only concern would be spring rate, and whether or not it'd be too stiff.

The majority of this data was pulled from the following pages:
Coil Rates - Toyota 120 Platforms Forum
Rear Spring Comparison - Page 13 - Toyota FJ Cruiser Forum
Federal-Mogul Resource Center - Vehicle Look-up

Thanks for this thread, quite helpful!

Thanks so much, this is great info.
I've been researching a lot recently as I'm looking to replace my front FJ coils. Was looking at Tacoma coils but couldn't find enough info on them (potential lift, rating). I have an ARB & steel skids and the FJs aren't quite enough. I'm only looking for about an inch over stock lift so didn't want to go with OME. Seems like the MOOGs might just fit the bill!

ARK_SWAMP_RIDER a heads up the rear 2" lift Radflo coils...
They have a spring rate of 220 in/lbs. I measure the free length of the radflo coils as 15.25". ARK_SWAMP_RIDER

Any sway bar knowledge out there? Are there softer ones than what I have? 98% road driven, so I gotta have something, but I want it flexier in the dirt...too lazy to do disconnectors...

ARK_SWAMP_RIDER

I just got off the phone with Moog regarding spring rates.

81045 is 191lbs/in
81081 is 171 lbs/in

just thought I'd share so you can update the table in the first post.

Just unpacked the new coils I ordered for my wives 4runner. Moog are junk, they're getting returned tomorrow. Anyone considering moog coils , reconsider.

Funny you comment...I finally got logged on via a PC to update the first post with the Moog spring rates. I've not been a fan of Moog. Even though they are OEM replacement, they are much different specs than the factory coils.

Thanks for the info!

Bump. This a good thread ASR - don't remember reading it before.

Please refresh me - are FJ coils the same for 2WD vs. 4WD?

Great information!

Hey Ark, I had a couple questions I was hoping you could help me with. I'm planning an FJ spring swap for the rear of my 4R, and I have given up on finding a set of low mileage ones, so I'm just going to buy new ones. There seems to be different part numbers for pre-2010 4x4s, post-2010 4x4, and the 4x4 TT model. Since I'm buying new, are any of those preferred over any others?

Also, I plan on staying away from MOOG, but what about ACDelco 'professional' springs...Any good?

Thanks for all your hard work, sir!

I know the front coils are different, not sure on the rear. If you're in the market, I'd stick with 4wd coils to be safe.

The 2010+ I believe are a thicker diameter, but not sure if rate is different. I always thought all 4wd coils were the same, but based on the part numbers maybe the TT coils are different. I don't know of anyone who's tried AcDelco coils, only aftermarket ones I've read about are Moogs.

Most all of my info is compiled from various threads I've found. I don't have any specific resource for specs of the coils, so unfortunately that's the best answer I can provide.

I like my Moog front FJ coils. They were a good price and seem to ride nicely. I heard of fitment issues in the back so I didn't go Moog on them.
