Coil Rates: OEM 4runner, OEM FJ, Moog, & Others

You forgot to update the OME specs... I linked there catalog above for easy reference for you...
also might be worthwhile adding the Sway a way rear 1.5" lift coils... seems like 15.75" free length with 195 lb/in rate, I haven't been able to find the other specs on these rear springs: Sway-A-Way 1.5" Lift Rear Coil Set

Finally found time to update my list with the info you provided. The SAW 1.5 coils are listed as a 15% increase, but my calculations came out to 8.33%. Where did you get the SAW rate from? Maybe it's actually a little higher, or the 15% is off?

Just got the rate from the model description on the website... the length seemed to match so I figured the 195lbs what the rate... maybe a bad assumption... not sure what %increase that is over stock so whatever you calculated I'd go with...

Ok....just wanted to try to verify the info. Thanks for providing the specs on those and the OME link, very beneficial.

Based on the chart, I think the Moog 81088(for TR4 V8) with 5100s set at .85 on the fronts is what I will do for my V6 4WD. I am putting the 5100s on the rear too but cant decide on the best coil. The Moog 81045 for the TR4 are actually a tad shorter than OEM coils according to the chart and coil rate is missing. I would like to stiffen up the ride a little bit and add an inch(not much more) to the rear. So what rear coil set should I go with? I don't know of anyone who has gone with the 81045.

ellroy2,

If it's any help. Today I called Moog's tech support, and asked the rep for the rate of 81045. He said the specs should be on the website (Th problem solver). I told him that the specs do not show the rate. He checked and agreed. He put me on hold for few minutes, then came back with the rate. It is 191 Lb/In. 6.1% higher than the OEM of 180 Lb/In.

Thanks Whalerman! Since there seems to be some mixed reviews on the Moog FJ coils(some guys like them and some say too stiff), I think I will go ahead and try the 4Runner coils(81088 and 81045). I still haven't heard of someone running the 81045s on the rear, so I guess I will be the guy to give them a try. I don't want more than an inch or so lift on the rear, so I am worried the 81081s would be too much for me anyways. Hopefully I can get a little bit of lift out of the 81045 paired with an improved ride with the stiffer spring rate....

I'm doing the same as well. I already ordered the 81088 & 81045 as well as the Billies 5100s. They're on their way.

I figured I'd say something, I'm guessing I'm the first guy to get the FJ Moog's on the forum. They were put on in early June and have over 5K on them already. I like them, but I do have some notes on them. The front springs seem a bit soft to me - perhaps I just like stiff, stiff springs. On the road they feel nice and tight, but offroad, the front of the 4R seems to dive and put stress on the Bilstein 5100s I run with them. Maybe it's just me, but my '96 didn't seem to dip that much. As for the rear, they are stiff and really nice. They can tow without even showing sag and are plenty beefy for offroad. I'm confident I could add a steel bumper with them. I run the DS 1.5s on top of them, and I have plenty of lift in the back. Also, from seeing what the other guys have as far as drivers' side lean, I have some but not too much (around .6") and could probably remove my right side spacer to fix that.

Overall, they are SUPER well priced. You could get them all, shipped to your door, for less than $100 new. The only downside is that the fronts seem a bit soft off road, but all 4 are good on pavement. And I've noticed a fair amount of rust growing on them, which alarms me, but I suppose I could sand and re-paint them. Perhaps upon purchase, you guys could throw on a coat or two of anti-rust paint.

Thar's my $.02 on the Moog FJ's. Hope it helps!

I'm still waiting for someone to do some calculations with Hooke's law to get some first hand elasticity figures on these springs...

That's strange the fronts feel so soft considering this chart rates them one of the stiffest. I was planning on going with the 4x4 4runner moogs because I didn't want too stiff of a ride.

Hmmm, that is kinda concerning about the rust. I just looked at my stock springs that are over 6 years old with 85k on them and there is not a hint of rust, whereas the rest of my underbody has at least some degree of rust going on. Only one winter and not even a full year with your Moogs does not seem right for signs of rust already....

ARK_SWAMP_RIDER I still think you should link this thread off your 4th Gen suspension options/ faq sticky in the 1st post there.... so much good coil spec info in this thread.

Thank you for the spring rates chart. It's a huge help in deciding on what to replace the xreas suspension with on my 05 runner.

Did you put the spacer on the front or rear? Or both?

I just used the Cornfed spacer on the driver side rear.

Done, thanks for the reminder. I'll try to do more with it later, just hard to do from a phone.

Specs on moog taco coils? I have OEM Tacos on my 4R, I like 'em a lot...seems like most folks are going FJ with slight disappointment...try tacos?!?!?

I tried looking those up when I made the chart, Moog does not list the specs. The only thing they show is a complete strut assembly, they don't even show the coils separately like they do for the 4runner and FJ

How about 5th gen front/rear coils? Curious on them too??

Here are the factory coil part#'s. The V6 and V8 are different. Also they are showing the front left and right are different. I have never noticed or picked up on this before.

This is for the V6.
4813135451 $77.66 Right Side
4813135471 $104.52 Left Side
4823135281 $73.52 Rear

This is for the V8.
4813135461 $ 103.41 Right Side
4813135481 $ 104.52 Left Side
4823135281 $ 73.24 Rear

Why Toyota shows a different price on the rears with them being the same is kinda whacked.

Bilsteins 5100 @ .85 with Moog V8 Springs on 2006 SR5 V6

I went for it last night and installed my new shocks and springs. Sprayed the Springs with Rust-Oleum undercoating to prevent rusting. I was torn between setting the Bilsteins at .85 or 1.75. Ended up going with .85 out of necessity.

I used the no compressor method on YouTube
https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=vkVLBOnAifc

For some reason I was not able to set the shock in the 2.5" or 1.75" position and get the lower control arm to meet back up with the wheel assembly. Fortunately it turned out for the best. The combo of the 5100's set up at .85 and the Moog V8 spring gave me the lift I was looking for as long as it doesn't settle to much.

When I took the truck off of the jack stands and the measurement showed a gain of 4"! (old measurement 33" new measurement 37" from ground to top of wheel well). The truck looked way lowrider. I took it out for a drive and did a little 4 wheeling in the school parking lot down the street and when I came back things had settled in at a gain of 2.75" (new measurement 35.75" from ground to top of wheel well). Perfect!

I'm going to do the rears next week with 5100's and Moog springs as well. Hope it doesn't lift the back to much. I like the almost flat look.
