Cold Air Intake thread

OK, so I was hoping to make a thread where all the different types of CAI's could be examined for their pro's and con's. I know this place is a wealth of knowledge, and I was hoping to use that knowledge to help me make an informed purchase of a cold air intake this Christmas. Basically any information is welcome. I was thinking about doing a K&N, but apparently the wet filter can foul up the MAF sensor, and I don't want that. I'm trying not to spend too much here. $300-ish is where I'd like to stay.

By the way, I have a V8, so I would appreciate info regarding CAI's that fit the V8.

I just installed the K&N and LOOOOOOOVE it!!!! :bigok: It's one of my favorite mods. I have a lifted 4R and by your avatar it looks like you have the same and I hated how I had a beefy truck with no sound.

Been installed for about a month and no problems!

Actually that's not my truck in my avatar, it's just a really nice looking 4R until I can get some good pics of mine to post. I guess I have been and still am leaning towards K&N, but I have heard there could be issues when off-roading. K&N is certainly the most economical choice though...

I off road every weekend! Not one single problem. The only thing I think I'm going to be doing is cleaning it a lot but thats not a problem for me. Bought mine off of ebay for 217

From what I gathered from my research before I bought the K&N was that the Volant was a lot quieter. The thing that people didn't like about the KN was that its not a TRUE CAI because the intake wasn't in the wheel well. Personally, I didn't care and love how loud it is.

i will have my k/n on friday. hopefully get it on saturday. i will post the results then. really looking forward to getting it.

I have zero experience with the CAI's on the 4runner but wasnt there an issue with it changing the powerband in a bad way? I modified my airbox on my explorer and thought it definatly sounded better but cant remember how it helped power wise.

The way see it is if you get the K&N and dont like the open elemate whats keeping you from making a fiberglass shroud for it. You could give it more insulation and breathing room than the Volant has as well. One thing i did notice and you touched on was on my explorer and the K&N filter my throttle body did accumilate a greasy dirt but it wasnt too bad. On the same note that means it went to the engine as well but i didnt check a paper filter first in order to get a cleanliness baseline.

with any wet filter, you stand a chance of fouling up the MAP,if that happens , particles will make it to the engine, & theres alot of debate on the K&N s filtering ability, that said, i ran one for ten years on another vec. & the only problem i had, if you could call it that, was having to clean the throttle body more often, it is louder than some others, & since its not in a sealed "box", its not a true CAI either. over the years , ive had a wet filter foul up my MAP in my 4runner & other vec.s too.( they were oiled from the factory) so in my opinion, its better to play it safe, & stick to a dry filter, maybe AFE cai (same as TRD cai), volant now has a dry one but its more $, theres others as well. the map is very easy to remove & clean , but bear in mind that if it does foul, the signs are - worse mpg, rough running, then it can seem to want to, & can, stall when ya stop at a red light. thats why i switched to dry, some may not have had problems, it takes a few thousand miles to manifest, but it can happen.
