Does anyone use a Come-a-long? I am thinking of getting one for when I get stuck in Snow and mud. I dont plan on using it much. I wont wheel anything hardcore but sometimes the snow gets really deep. Any info on a come-a-long would be great. Thanks.

I have used them, they work. A good strap is a must too. Often you'll need it to reach a good anchor point and if somebody comes by it's much easier to get pulled than to 'come-a-long'.

Some limitations: 1) The range of pull is somewhat limited in terms of distance. 2) It'll wear you out! 3) The biggest problem, IMHO, is that your body is right next to tightly stretched steel cable. They do work but please be careful. A snapped cable or boken attachment point could get the cable to whip you into two pieces. Snapping cable is nothing to mess with...

Having said all that bad stuff I pulled out my old Dodge truck I owned as a teenager a few times, it definately saved me from my girfriends Dad on two occasions:biggrin2:

I understand it might not be the easiest to use, but for that price and the ability to get out of a sticky situation. I think it is worth it... price:ability is a good ratio, i think

:iagree: Just use some common sense when winching and it's definately a great bang for the buck tool.
 
How hard is it to get the vehicle moving. Im not a big guy by any means... just want to make sure the car is going to get out when i try winching....

:confused: :nerd: Uhmmm, that's hard 'cause it is so subjective to describe it. If you have the strength to load eight 80lb bags of cement (or similar) then you know. It won't take more brute strength or stamina than loading eight bags from a low, flatbed cart into the 4Runner. How's that? Does that give you an idea?

I havent had the chance to load cement bags..hahaha....hopefully I will be able to.
 
Come-a-longs are a great tool to have around. This past weekend it was an invaluable tool to have on the trail. I used it several times on one really bad hill to keep my 4R out of the trees. Damn ninja trees on this hill claimed a Jeep TJ's windshield, a K5's driver side mirror and my pristine front bumper. Ok, it wasn't really pristine.

How hard was it to use? Would it be strong enough to winch out of mud or snow?

They are not hard to use but they do take some practice. They are strong enough to winch in mud and for sure snow. On Saturday I was dangerously close to scraping a tree on a muddy hill. Traction was pretty minimal and even with my aired-down M/Ts I was having trouble making it up the hill due to it being so off-camber. We attached the come-a-long to the front of my 4R and the other end to a tree even with my front bumper and about 8 feet away. Using the come-a-long we winched my front end over about 3 feet (enough to get me away from the tree). This was going slightly uphill and with the vehicle in park. I would have been pretty screwed without it.

Good gosh that is cheap. I can get one locally for $50. Im thinking of getting it. I think its a gret bang for the buck tool....

It saved my hoop the other day. Otherwise I was looking at some bad tree scrapes.

Lol, I noticed in your sig the line about the tree-branch pinstripes. Here in Kentucky we call them redneck pinstripes. :rocker:

always use these with a cloth or bag or blanket over the cable to slow it down if it does snap. also tilt it to the side so you are as far away from the cable as possible..

a snapping cable is DEADLY, i know for a fact as my grand fathers brother was killed instantly from a snapping cable (although they were pulling out a tree stump not a truck)
