So my wife bought me a basic remote starter for Christmas (Merry Christmas btw) does anyone know if I need a bypass or anything? I've got a 2011 TE w/o push to start.

Just a quick reality check, have you ever installed a remote start in a newish vehicle before? Any previous alarm/remote start installation experience?

I say this only because I used to own a car audio/alarm shop, and installing a remote start into a 4 runner, with all its ecu management of EVERYTHING electrical, this is NOT for a novice to do, and I don't think Compustar warranties any of their equipment unless its installed by an authorized installer in their network (I could be wrong about this, but this is not uncommon, ie., Clifford systems doesn't even give you an installation manual with their system).

Also, just the fact that the cs800s is an entry level system, it will require you to tie into the stock alarm system, and there's a hell of a lot of wires you will need to tap into! However, if you feel comfortable in doing this, and you have a good working knowledge of all the things that need to be tapped/disabled/modified, here's your wiring for a 2012 4 runner:

I don't believe there are any extra modules you need for doing remote start with the 4 runner, and I didn't see any extra stuff on Compustar's website either.

Good luck and take LOTS of photos of the installation! Last one I did took 2 days and I was glad I took a couple photos, as I had to refer back to them a year later when I had an issue with one wire that wasn't quite crimped very well!

I definitely DO NOT intend on installing this thing myself. A stereo or light bars I'll install myself all day... but not something like the remote start. Last thing I want to do is fudge it up and turn Jemima into a 4900# paperweight.

My wife heard me say I would love a remote start for those bitter cold winter days and she ended up buying on for me. There's a shop in town that I spoke with that is a dealer for Compustar, they will most likely be the shop that installs the starter if I do decide to install it.

LOL! A paperweight!!!

That's cool, I totally respect you for taking it to a shop to get done! If you saw the amount of wires necessary to do a proper remote start, as well as just how much interior needs to be ripped apart, I think about 90% of the folks on here would freak out and start having seizures!

My last one I did was on a '98 Rodeo, it took me 2 days to finish, but it worked well and did everthing it was capable of doing (Python alarm w/remote start and 2 options for window roll up and sunroof open).

Personally, I'd do one that has alarm functions too, then you could just get rid of the stock alarm keyfob altogether and have just one, but they get real expensive when you add alarm and other peripheral functionality.

I'd love to hear what they charge you and whether they had to install any add-on modules once you're done with the install! Good luck!!!

The shop said something to the effect of $260 + bypass if it were needed, but I'm probably not going to have it done anytime soon because of my work tempo.

if it says best buy, add another $200-$300 to that installed price.

they find ways to add stuff to jack up the price to over $500 :)

flyinhawaiian01 is the OEM remote start module the same level of intensive install? i had figured it was a box with a harness that just clips in line with other wires since its OEM, its the one i wanted.

You're asking the real questions.

It could be, and most likely is since its a dealer-installed option. Not baggin' on any toyota techs here, but a full-on remote start system would not be something they would be qualified to install, considering it would need to be warrantied and serviced by a Toyota tech, just not something they'd do unless it was a simple plug-n-play.

Here's a link with some info about the Toyota VIP remote start system:

Looks like Jeremy556 had the stock remote start done in that thread, he'd be better to answer your questions than I.

Personally, if I do get a remote start, I'll do a complete aftermarket alarm/remote start system and just disable the whole stock alarm system in my SR5. And I'd also want a complete 2 way system, that allows me to monitor my vehicle when I'm not within range of the alarm siren. It also lets me know if the engine is actually running or not when I do a remote start.

I'm one of those guys that believe you should "do it right the first time", and if I can't afford to do it right the first time, then wait till I can. I've found myself hating decisions where I've done that and ended up spending even more money to replace it months, and sometimes weeks, later.:twitch:

You can download and install the geeksquad app for iOS or Android. On there is a fit guide which will beak out all the additional charges. The link I provided includes the remote start, basic install labor, the integration module and labor to install that.

It's much cheaper tp buy the remote start with bundled labor versus bringing in your own starter, that is the same with any shop.

Here is what I am seeing at regular price, not the sale price in the link:

are there any aftermarket remote starts that will keep the engine running even after you unlock/open the door.

if there was an aftermarket one where i could get in and just turn the key to run and be on my way without the engine shutting down, id go that rout.

pretty jealous of my dads truck that can do that from the factory, standard.

My CompuStar CM6200 does, programed it to run for 20 minutes too! Remote (Prime 9000 2-way) range is roughly one mile, and since it's a 2-way, remote confirms when vehicle starts, doors lock/unlock with chirps and flashing symbols on remote. I also enabled the included alarm feature, works really well.

Have a buddy that's an authorized dealer, he programed the Blade-AL, then I installed the system. Took a couple of hours and three additional relays to interface. Very happy with the system and would recommend to anyone!

The Toyota VIP remote start is generally a port or dealer installed option. Any Toyota tech is more than qualified to install it. It is all plug and play wire harnesses and modules, just requires dash dis-assembly and access to real Techstream to re-program the immobilizer.

I did the install following the service manual instructions and had the immobilizer reprogramming done at a local shop that has a Mongoose cable - the eBay cables do not allow reprogramming.

Initially considered VIP system, but after finding out range was only as good as key fob "line of sight", and system had to be shut down before entering vehicle (kind of defeats purpose of remote start IMHO), it was time to look elsewhere. Since then, believe they make range extenders, but have no experience with them????????

Another thing to consider, you can have the best system money can buy, but if it's installed by a hack you'll have nothing but troubles. Stay away from installers that use Scotch Locks, T-Taps, or strip wire twist and tape, these are poor connections! Just my 2 cents.................

That's true, but what I was trying to say is installing an AFTERMARKET alarm, a dealership would not be able to do, they most likely would drive vehicle to nearest car audio/alarm shop to have done, as they do not have trained techs doing that sort of work.

I figured the VIP was literally plug and play, that's what dealerships are capable of installing for security and remote start, dealerships normally do not get into anything that requires tapping into stock wiring unless there's a white molex plug for them to just plug into.
