Just wanting to get confirmation on a few things. Been doing a lot of searches, but have gotten a few conflicting items.

First off, I picked up a set of Tundra rims a while back.



The plan being to eventually get a chance to do the TBU and this would eliminate any issues with the calipers rubbing. Cost is a major factor at the moment so the mods are coming slow and not always to the extent that I want. With that in mind, I recently picked up some OME 890's for the rear and Toytec spacers for the front. I also picked up the panhard drop bracket.

My understanding is that the backspacing on these particular rims causes too much rubbing on the UCA's without spacers when running 285/70/17s. Can anyone verify this or not? I believe they have a 15mm offset or 4.8 to 5 inch backspace and are 17" by 7.5". I know several of the members are running them or the Sequoia variant.

Also, will I be able to run the stock shocks for now and upgrade to longer length in the future, as long as I keep the offroading to light trails in the interim? The plan is to eventually upgrade the front to a coilover with Bilstein 5100s and then the rear to 5125s or the TRD Tundra coils and shocks. I just hate to upgrade the rear shocks and not the front at the same time. I will have to keep the offroading limited and I understand that, but how crappy of a drive is it going to be with the 890s and stock shocks in the back?

I wouldn't run them stock shocks with the 890's, you might have to spend money replacing them sooner then you'd like. Personally, I'd wait 'til ya had the cash and do everything at once-

Although i heard different, meaning that there were a couple members who somehow fit 285s on the tundras and said they were good to go.

I personally owned a set of tundra wheels as well with 265s and those were perfect. Yet when examining if i could do 285s and measuring with my current lift at the time which was 2.5" lift. There was no way 285s were going to fit without rub.

Then again i did measure in the since that i plan to offroad my truck and like the clearance to be enough so that i know there will be no troubles offroad.

But there was a simple solution so that 285s would work with the current 2.5" lift at the time. If i were to go ahead and buy some spacers from spidertrax or allpro offroad that would have solved my issue for sure.

Dont quote me on this as i didnt get to that point before i sold my tundras and went with some other wheels. But my 2 cents of when i did own the tundras with 265/70/17 duratracs and 2.5" they were perfect. I am also sure if i remember correctly i did run 265/70/17 rugged trails (less aggressive tread) on my stock 97 with no lift and had ZERO issues.

Also to address your 890s and stock shock question.

I had 891s with Bilstein 4600 HDs.
Those are supposedly "stock-ish" replacements but may or may not be a bit longer in travel.

But that setup worked fine and although i can say i get a lot more stretch and tuck with the 5125/891 setup i have now that HDs/891 setup worked out well enough for moderate trails for a year or so.

Thanks for the input guys. I may have to look at upgrading the shocks now, and just getting new shoes later.

I just got some 285/70/17 Nitto Terra Grapplers installed on my Tundra rims and its super close to touching the UCA. I'm going to get spacers but decided to mount them first. It all depends on the tire if they fit but it would be better to get some spacers.

Here is the final product. It's close to the UCA, but fits.

I'm running 285/70/17 Duratracs on Tundra wheels, Light Racing UCAs and had rubbing issues. Definitely had to go with spacers.

Thanks for the replies guys. I went ahead and ordered some Spidertrax 1.25" spacers for all four wheels and some OME shocks for the rear. Should put me a good setup of OME shocks and coils in back, then I can go with the toytec spacers temporarily up front. Also added an Airaid MIT and finally wired up some components I had. Coming along slowly.
