What bulbs are they trying to sell you that are close to $200? Sounds suspicious at best. I wouldn't waste your money. There are absolutely no bulbs you can plug right in for double the performance (for any cost).

It's not the answer you want to hear, but the only way to put more usable light on the road without blinding people is to retrofit in some new projectors designed for HID lighting. Yes, you're looking at $300+ in parts alone, and that's if you're a DIY guy. If you want someone else to do it for you, it will cost even more (but likely will get better results - obviously depends on your skill level and patience to make it work correctly). You get what you pay for.

You're correct, not what I was hoping to hear. So if not double, how about noticeable or even significant improvement over OEM w/ upgraded hallageon bulbs? I'm not an electric wiring kind of guy. Be afraid I'd screw something up bad. So it seems that if I paid a shop plus parts I'm looking a $600 for HID, am I in the ball park?

Hi folks,
Wanna try to stay w/ the OEM halagen lighting fixtures / housings & wiring if I can to save $. That being said, I find the OEM illumination insufficient.
I was told by my local Pep Boys that they stock replacement upgraded Phillips halagen bulbs that can double the light output as compared to OEM bulbs. This would be close to $200 in bulbs. Are these the best upgraded replacement for the OEM halagen housings & if not are there any better? If none better (i.e. Improved illumination) than these top of the line Phillips, are there any of equal quality & output for less $?

I too would like to know the part # to the Philips bulbs Pep Boyz wants to sell you....
Post the number so we can do some research.

Well, I just checked and the bare minimum H1 mini 7.0 full kit runs $270 (can always find a 10% or 15% code too). So let's say $260 shipped for an even number - that is parts alone. You might be able to find someone to do it for $340. It's honestly hit or miss on the skill of the labor when you start to skimp on the price (which, in turn, will affect the looks, performance, and longevity of the setup). I'm not saying you absolutely can't find someone to do a good job for $600 all in, but it might be a stretch.

There are upgraded halogen bulbs for slight improvement over oem, but they will have a significantly shortened life. For the latest info, go here

You want the best lighting? ... you'll have to do an HID projector retrofit. There are several on here. But it's not simple nor is it inexpensive.
Use the Google search for 5th gen and use "retrofit" ... you should find some.

Mr. [MENTION=103267]Saker[/MENTION] is correct for Gen 5.1 but not for your Gen 5.0. You do not want to put hid capsules in your reflector headlights.

I stand corrected, I missed the 2011 halogen reflectors, which in that case...only a full retrofit will work, PERIOD!

LED Mirror Turn-Signal Mod ???

Tried searching for this but no luck...

Has anyone installed LED marker lights on their side mirrors and wired them into the turn signals??

I wish my SR5 had the mirror turn signals like the Premium, so it got me wanting to wire something up like this using some amber marker lights.

If there's a thread on this for 5th gens, than please help me out!

So at the end of the day.... what should I do? 9011 / H9 conversion or LED?

Fog lights yellow tint or an actual bulb?

HID's are only to be used behind our (2014+) Low Beam projector lens and not in High Beam reflectors. I have HID's in my Lows as well as many others here do.
Some prefer not to use HID's and use 9011's and LED's

So at the end of the day.... what should I do? 9011 / H9 conversion or LED?

Some use 9011's and LED's ... I have DDL TUNING LED's and they work fantastic in the High Beam reflectors when positioned properly.

Fog lights yellow tint or an actual bulb?

Personal preference. Or no tint and replace the fog assembly with a more efficient assembly like the Morimoto XB's (white or yellow) or Rigid's

Oh thank the lords..... Alright HID for lows are good to go for the lows then.

Leds for high beam

And fog lights assembly change. (Saw the Bajas and was impressed.... Saw the price tag.... And well, yeah....

and also get the
7443 Front Turn Signal Light Bulb - PUTCO SWITCHBACK PLASMA LED BULB (WHITE/AMBER),
would I have TWO Daytime Running Lights? If so I'd really need to disable the DRLs on the Highbeams.

No, 2016 doesn't have DRL in blinkers. You would have to do some serious modifications to electrical to use switchbacks in 4Runner.

I believe the plug-and-play 7443 Front Turn Signal Light Bulb from PUTCO called SWITCHBACK PLASMA LED BULB (WHITE/AMBER) turns the front turn signal light into a white DRL when it's not being used as an amber turn signal.

I believe the plug-and-play 7443 Front Turn Signal Light Bulb from PUTCO called SWITCHBACK PLASMA LED BULB (WHITE/AMBER) turns the front turn signal light into a white DRL when it's not being used as an amber turn signal.

That's your marker light (also known as parking light), not DRL. With switchback LED you can turn your orange marker into white which will blink yellow when turn signal is on. 2014+ model has DRL in headlights (high beam running partial power).

So the bottom line is when you turn DRL but not parking (marker) lights this bulb will not light if you use blinker in this configuration then this marker bulb will start blinking orange.

When you turn marker light then DRL in headlight will go off and marker will start making white light. Then when you turn on blinker, the white marker will turn off and it will start blinking orange.


I have 2012 which has different setup: DRL is the same bulb and filament as blinker (1156NA - single contact bulb), and ECU together with flasher is controlling when this bulb will be on and off. I have not seen 1156NA type switchback (bulb with one contact and logic that is distinguishing the color base on supplying power type (steady vs interrupted). But maybe I did not look hard enough

Just gound that VLED is selling "V3 Triton"*which can be used in 2012 as DRL and blinkers but really it is nit simple bulb swap but full blown installation as it requires separate power to control box that is making bulbs switch. Too much trouble by my book.

But this is still not for 2014+ as DRL.

I wanted to convert as many bulbs to LED as I could where it made sense, except for lowbeams where I went with HID. Used all Philips bulbs.

I'm still undecided on what to run in the highbeam/DRLs.

I went with yellow fog bulbs because those cars stand out more to me in oncoming traffic in all the rain we have in Florida.

As for the 7443 and 7440 the Philips bulbs were only available in red and you need to tap a resistor into the factory wiring to avoid the fast blinker. I'm not comfortable doing that to a brand new truck and lose the ability to switch back to a normal bulb if theres a problem.

Also decided against using the Putco turn signal switchback bulb and the Diode Dynamics Tail-As-Turn module (for now).

Ok I've done conversion to my reverse domes maps vanity puddles plates and door..... Does anyone know the size for the glove? I've searched high and low but no one has given a definitive answer..... 74? 34? Have to mod? I'm lost
