No, the outer bezel is not required to come off, I'm just making it easier for the PPF installer to put the film on. They come separate and are around $250 for the pair.

the diode on a single side is a good sign those won't be very good

I have the XD HID kit. I didn't go with the 4300 though, I went with the 6500. At first I was worried it might be too blue, but I think it is actually perfect. I have not had to re-aim my lights or anything and I have only been flashed once since having them (couple months).

I thought if doing the same thing you are thinking of doing and I am happy with the route I went.

Those are specific to projector housing in that the base fitment is H11, lol.

The most capable LED kit I've seen in the OEM projector housings is the one from XD, since it has diodes on two sides. If there's a company making a 3 (or more) arrangement diode with an H11 base, I haven't seen it, but I'd certainly like to know about it. The more that any replacement bulb matches the exact pattern of output from a halogen H11 (360 degree light output, bulb length, etc.), the better it'll act in a projector.

If you're going LED for the LBs, the XD kit is the one to go with as far as I know. I'm currently still running the H9/H11 incandescent swap which I've been really happy with but I may try the XD LEDs next.

I'm new to all of this headlight mod stuff and new to the 4Runner in general so if someone could please verify that these two products I have below are the right fitment and will play well with the truck that would be much appreciated. I have a 2017 TRD Off Road Premium. I want to maintain the DRL functionality and have read up on the DDM Saber lights as being able to go into lower output for DRL mode and higher output for high beams.

I've been doing a bit of research on upgrading my headlights and as most do I started looking at HIDs and such. I corresponded with Daniel Stern, of Daniel Stern Lighting, and am going to share his information here.

I have ordered the following bulbs for my OEM housings and will report back as soon as I get them installed. If I have the time and energy I'll take some photos but generally I don't do that.

The following is edited to remove the discussion about my wife's RAV4 lighting.

High beams [...], get https://www.amazon.com/dp/B000C9QPKS/?tag=2402507-20 . They are not some tinted or overwattage version of 9005, but share the identical filament geometry and base architecture as well as the same power consumption.

Here's the comparison:

Regular 9005: 12.8V, 65W, 1700 lumens, 320 hours

HIR1 (9011): 12.8V, 65W, 2530 lumens, 320 hours

The 9011 and 9012 bulbs have a double-wide top ear on the plastic bulb base, this is
to comply with the law requiring different bulbs to have different bases.
The extra-wide plastic top ear is easily trimmed or filed to make the bulb
fit your headlamp's bulb receptacle. Once that's done, they go directly
into the headlamp, and the existing sockets snap on. Please see
HIR bulb base modification for details. Disregard Amazon's warning that the bulbs won't fit your car.

Fog lamps on the 4Runner: No legitimate upgrade.

Fog lamps [...] should be turned *off* just about 100% of the time. Please see Daniel Stern Lighting Consultancy and Supply for thorough information about what fog lamps will/won't and can/can't do.

Of course, your headlamps and fog lamps _must_ be aimed carefully and correctly per
Daniel Stern Lighting Consultancy and Supply with any bulbs, but
especially with these high-output bulbs.

For DRL/High beams: DDM Tuning Saber

If you keep reading the DDM thread you'll see that they flicker in DRL mode. There are currently NO LED options for the HB spot that don't either run as full brights or flicker in DRL mode. If you're dead set on having LED HBs and normally functioning DRLs (not full brights nor flickering), you'll have to change your DRLs to a different spot (i.e. having the fogs be your DRLs)

If you're referring to the XD HID kits, none of them require CANBUS.

If this is for a 4Runner then you only need CANbus/resistors for the turn signals to prevent them from rapid flashing.
