So it looks like cooper has put out a new MT tire right around the time that I am in the need for new tires. I was originally looking at the st/maxx tires but they are really expensive compared to other brands. The new stt pro is cheaper and there is a 70 dollar rebate. My only hesitation is that they weigh in at 61 lbs. Do you think that's pushing it in our rigs? overall diameter is 33.03 also.

Cooper must have raised the msrp on the ST Maxx, I recall paying around $210 each for 285/70/17 and $175 for a 255/70/17 spare. However, I know people who considered the cooper's a great deal, so perhaps now it's just more appropriate given the rest of the market.. they're still cheaper than BFG's.
As for for weight, the ST Maxx aren't much lighter. If you need durable tires you don't really have an option, they're all inherently heavy. If you don't, I wound't. Better fuel economy and less wear on the truck. Load Range E Cooper AT3's weigh in at 49lbs per Tread Depot and the Cooper $70 rebate applies. These are the tires that Expo Portal's boys ranked highest in their test last year. If you haven't seen it, look up "where the rubber meets the road" it may be worthwhile.

My at3's have been phenomenal off road and they look much more aggressive in person than in pics.
Did you go with the E rated at3?

I actually went with p rated 285's and I'm pretty sure the e rated will look even more aggresive.

There was a thread last week (sorry, I'm too lazy to search for it) about this new tire from Cooper. My $.02 on it are 1) Cooper makes a great tire at a great price point, and 2) why would you want a MT tire if the majority of your miles are on the street.
I say that because we've got to be honest with ourselves about how much time we spend on pavement versus trails. I replaced BFG KM2's with Cooper ST/Maxx and couldn't be happier. As I pointed out in the previous thread, I spend more time off road than the average bear and the ST/Maxx is an awesome tire. Quiet and smooth on pavement and more than aggressive enough in the most demanding off road terrain, including mud. Both tires are E rated and are heavy, but if you want a tough off road tire that's the price you pay. A dedicated MT tire sux on the street. The ST/Maxx is the best compromise tire I've found, regardless of manufacturer.

I agree 100%, came from KM2's as well. I think mkeegan27's question here had to do with price too. Oddly, the ST Maxx is a few dollars more expensive than their new mud terrain, plus the mud terrain currently has a $70 rebate. I would imagine Cooper is offering this incentive to increase visibility of their new tire in the market.
Either way, what we're left with is a less expensive mud tire that weighs negligibly more weight. I won't speak for you but I imagine we'd both argue that weight would be of less concern between these two tires than the daily performance of their tread pattern. End of the day whoever's buying these tires will have to make that call.

Another vote for the ST Maxx, the have taken everything I have thrown at them, and they are particularly good on washboards and rough baja roads, and are a really good balance. They are relatively quiet too, although for the record as time has gone on and they have additional wear they are getting noisier. A buddy just put the STT Pros on his FJ, they look super aggressive and dope but I am not sure the margin of improved performance off road is going to outweigh the loss in on-road performance?
