It's almost like an insurance policy. If you don't ever need it and if tech, sciene, and medicine can never make a use out of it, you'll have lost that money to collect and store the blood. if one day, you can use it, you'll be glad that you have it because it'll will be a perfect match for that particular child and family members may even be able to use it since the blood is similar in ways to other family members, particularly parents and siblings.

What conditions?

How rare are these conditions?


Sorry but I am also skeptical this isn't simply a way to scam money out of fearful parents.

I assume that if you go through this much trouble for the kid (I'm not a parent yet) that when the kid gets older you will make sure he/she diets and exercises properly instead of vegging out in front of the TV all week like most kids these days.

Despite all the advances in science over the last 20 years; children born today are probably going to live shorter lives than their parents did (for the first time ever) because of childhood obesity.

Certain conditions like CANCER don't have to do with exercise and eating right. It's all part of mutation. Everyone would live healthy till 110 if it was just as simple as that.

But does anyone know what conditions the cord blood is used to treat? How rare is it?

From the description it sounds like it is saved under the hope it can be used for future treatments with technology not yet invented to treat a condition that might not ever occur.

Is that accurate?

Update

Just wanted to update this thread with what we did.

We ended up going with CBR Cord Blood Banking | Largest, Most Experienced Bank | CBR®

The experience was for the most part painless. The only PITA part was getting the medical staff to draw blood from my wife to fill the tubes. Because the phlebotomist couldn't "Bill" for it, can you believe that?

Anyhow, CBT sent a courier within 5 hours and everything got to the bank the next day.

Just word of advice, make sure to tell every single person you can at the hospital that you plan to do this, at ever staff shift. They will forget through out the chaos.
