Cornfed installed on 2006 SE

Ok, I understand. I measured everything out and did the math.

I came up with a need to reduce the shock length 1.86"

Current measurement:

Shock length - 21.5"
Top mount to lower mount vertical centerline - 7.5"
Vertical line from lower shock mount - 20.15 (calculated)

Calculated original measurements:

Shock length - 19.64
Top mount to lower mount vertical centerline - 7.5"
Vertical line from lower shock mount - 18.15 (current less 2")

Does this make sense?

Yea, that the way I did my calculations. The only thing you calculate 90degr. triangle, and I did full triangle. I think I came up with 1.8 something, but my measurements were involving of calculating the internal and external angles and integrating. Your results are pretty the same as mine. I just come up with an idea of 1.5, because it's should be easier to remember.
 
For those that were trying to move the shocks mounts for a softer ride...

When you start moving the shock mounts you need to be aware that with the XREAS you stand the chance of blowing it up. (older forum posts about moving the shocks show it has caused xreas issues)

Cornfed is looking at making a split rear spacer that would allow for additional travel between the bumpstop and normal ride height. This should allow for a softer rear ride as well.

From the research I did, it looks like the problem you are refering to was caused by adding a new lower shock mount (supplied with a NE lift kit) to the hole above the stock mount. The angle of this mount is not correct and causes the shock to bow and damages the seals. My thought is to add some sort of shim to the top of the shock or to add a new upper mount. In either case the angle would be kept the same avoiding this problem.

There was also some mention that when the shock mount was moved then the shock would bottom out before the bump stop was hit. With the Cornfed lift it looks like the bumpstop and the spring are under the shim so the travel is the same as stock.

If Cornfed splits the rear shim and allows raising the bumpstop to give more travel, will this cause the shock to bottom out if the shock mount is adjusted? If not I would like to get the new shim when available.

Is the bumpstop causing a problem now? From what I can tell, it allows for the same travel as without the shim?

My thinking is that the rear shock is extended too far which limits further extension over bumps. Because it is extended it may also reduce the effectiveness of the xreas and might change the dampening rate. In any case getting the shock back to stock length should make things behave the same as before the lift.
 
A split spacer would help if you are bottoming out too fast, but won't help if you are going to full extension on the rear shocks.

That's exactly what I'm working on... I hope Cornfed will work in a same directions.
 
Do you have a pic of the parts that come in the Cornfed kit?

Also, why is the front lift 3" while the rear is only 2"? How does this result in 3" overall?

Maybe those instructions everyone is talking about would shed some light on my queries. Just trying to understand how the 3" lift is acheived.

Also, is there now a solution that allows the XREAS to remain at stock extenstion? Does this resolve the issues mentioned by others regarding the change in ride and stability?
 
I think the front is lifted 3" and the back 2" to level the vehicle. Before the lift the rear was slightly higher than the front. I like the level look. Also lifting the rear 3" would overextend the rear shock even more and ultimately require longer shocks.

The rear shim is a solid plastic 2" shim that sits between the spring and the chassis. Pretty simple.

The front shim is split. A 1" aluminum shim is placed between the spring and the stock top plate. A 1/2" aluminum shim is placed between the top plate amd the chassis. The shim totals 1.5" and gives a 3" lift as a result of the swing arm geometry. The 1/2" shim sits on top of the shock/top plate so it does not effect the shock extension. The 1" shim does extend the shock 1" beyond the stock position. Anyway I think this is accurate. It has been a couple of months since I installed it. I had a pretty good hangover that day so I may have forgotton something about the design.

Hopefully a way to fix the rear shock will be forthcoming. At least 2 of us are working on it and I would hope Cornfed would also do the same since it would be a nice upgrade to their lift kit.

Has anyone here installed a spacer setup with spacers designed for 2.5" front and 1.5" rear? I'm trying to avoid the harshness in the rear, but still pick up a little clearance along with the ability to up my tire size to 275s. Cornfed informed me that they can make custom spacer sizes for whatever lift we want... I'm just trying to find pics of a 4Runner done with less than the standard 3"/2" kit. Thanks!

I had both kits: 3+2 and 2+1. Both of them are stiffer then stock, 2+1 is a little bit softer then 3+2, but not much. The reason is that you overextended your shocks, so it will be stiffer.
 
Your not overextending them, otherwise they would have no travel. You do reduce the amount of upward travel because you have effectively moved the resting position of the shock upwards by whatever the size of your spacers are. Sort of preloading them.

Are the shocks not linear in their movement - in other words as the shock moves toward the very top or the very bottom does the shock become stiffer? Without a reservoir I guess this might be why some people complain about the ride being more harsh. With my 2.5" Daystars I can honestly say I noted no difference in ride quality.
 
Out of the 50+ kits we've sold, most can't tell a difference from stock. Some notice a slightly stiffer ride, but if anything it's a more "secure" feeling I'd call it.

It rides very close to stock, so close you probably won't notice.

That's what I'm trying to establish. If the Cornfed kit, with it's 1" additional lift, is causing more stiffness than the Daystar, I'd probably lean towards Daystar (or a comparable custom Cornfed setup). I realize a lift is going to degrade the handling/ride quality somewhat, but I'd like to try for a happy medium.

i'm going to go w/ the 3/2 cornfed lift - did you have to do anything special to work around the x-reas system during the install? my biggest concern is accidentally messing up the x-reas. thanks for the great thread...
 
I have the Cornfed 3/2 and the I have only noticed one difference in ride quality/handling. When I drive over a speed bump, the rear end is a lot more firm. But in terms of turning, acceleration, deceleration dive, stiffness, etc...I haven't noticed any difference from stock.

PS - I have XREAS and the tech didn't mention anything about having to mess with the system when he installed the spacers.
