***Cracked Dashboard Action Request***

I was lucky and got my dash replaced by Toyota...but yes there are several on the forum who have gotten the Coverlay dash and are happy with it, a much cheaper option than having to pay Toyota's price for an OEM price and the Coverlay doesn't look bad at all!

You can get one for much less at Rockauto than you can from that Ebay seller!!

2004 TOYOTA 4RUNNER 4.7L V8 Dash Board Cover | RockAuto

I read a post of a person buying and installing this Coverlay dash. Not sure if it was on here. But they were very please and recommended it. Said easy install, fit well and looked good. Been considering getting one myself.

Put one on 6-9 months ago, very happy with it. Easy to install, looks OEM and you really have to look twice to know it's not the real dashboard you are looking at. Cheap and easy fix.

I had to resort to a dash cover on a hopelessly cracked dash on a Chrylser 300 in a previous life. I very recently acquired an almost pristine 2004 4Runner Limited that was babied by its previous (original) owner but has a hairline crack along the lip that creates the front edge over the instrument panel. A little black silicone sealant, a little masking tape and a lot of patience worked for me

Can somebody help me identify the color of the dash and door panels that looks like a very very dark blue, almost black. I ordered a coverlay dash in "dark blue" but it's still too light... significantly lighter. I talked to Rockauto, they said it is the correct one for dark blue. It's not a black dash and door panels. I swear on everything it looks lime a very deep dark blue. I'm assuming others here have the same color. What the heck is it called??

I'm seeing alot about the coverlay thing my main concern would be the effect on airbag deployment? My copilot is my bride and I don't think things would be good for her or me if something was to interfere with the airbag should it deploy! And I know this may be a petty thing to bring up but should it have an issue what kind of major Sh*t storm the insurance company may put us through!

Toyota replaced my dash during the extended warranty, but a few here who didn't get their's replaced have gone with the Coverlay dash, below a link to one member's Coverlay install, if you look at his 4th post in the topic he has photos of it installed, if you look at the passenger's side there's a rectangular section above the glove box where the air bag is under the OEM dash, the outline of the rectangular section is very thin vinyl and if and when the airbag needs to deploy it will easily push that section out and have no issue deploying IMHO, I haven't read of anyone that had an air bag deploy with a Coverlay dash but I very sure that Coverlay tested their design many, many time to insure that little section doesn't interfere with the bag's deployment, it would take them many years to sell enough dash boards to cover even one small lawsuit settlement not to mention a huge settlement so I'm sure they made sure to cover their bases on this.

In that case that's AWESOME! My dash is cracked like crazy and I hate the way it takes away from all the mods I'm doing in the cabin. Thanks for the information I will be buying on in the very near future!

Buy from Rockauto, they have the best price for the Coverlay dash.

How did you get the dealer to cover it?

Notice he doesn't say when the dealer fixed it. If it was before the cutoff date, there was no question but after that date Toyota refuses to replace any more. I suspect they felt like a 13+ year warranty was enough. Mine started cracking six months after the extended period and they would not do anything about it and frankly, didn't expect them to.

I ordered a dash cover for my 04 t4r v6 from Rockauto and I’ve just received it. The cover has a separate cover for the pax side airbag. My original dash doesn’t have have a separate opening for the airbag, it’s all solid. Do they build it like that to allow for the bag deployment?

The stock dash is probably scored on the underside so when the airbag deploys it will blow right through it. The dash cover has to have the separate piece for this reason.

^^the answer to your question.

Just discovered a hair line crack from the drivers side hood all the way to the passenger side dash, urghhhhhhhhhhhhhhh.

So with the warranty over (over 2 years now), what are folks doing to replace their dash?

I remember I saw someone had a "leather cover" for it and it had stitching on it, it looked really good. Can't be cheap, but at least that might never crack again and actually look nice. I know of a company that does that (thehogring.com). I'll contact them and share any info on other thread in the future.

EDIT: Thehogring is a site for upholstery professionals, so they don't do any kind of work. Check your local "custom shop" if you are interested in doing this.
