Yes it will be frequent. Mine will be a year old in June and I just I'm on my second windshield and it just got chipped last week (not cracking yet). First time I was passing a semi on the way back from wheeling in Ouray, last week I was passed by a family sedan on the freeway. Call it bad luck, but I've seen enough other posts on here to know better. It's the price we pay for having something with a steeper windshield, the Supra I had a few years ago was so sloped everything seemed to hit with less force and never got a crack. No biggie, glass insurance is cheap!

But 1000 miles is a good value, my windshield cracked after 60 miles, wasn't at home with the new truck and bang :frusty:

Sorry man, that sucks. But, I don't believe its some inherent design or material flaw in the vehicle; more just a result or character trait of the style of vehicle. Jeeps, FJ Cruisers, etc all have pretty steep windshields and would be theoretically just as prone to it.
Try not to follow dump trucks or other refuse-spewing vehicles too closely...or heck, even other cars for that matter.
I'm 10,000 miles in and not a crack or chip one yet. I guess I'm lucky...or cautious.
When I got the crack in the 53rd mile on my way home I was disappointed, but then I got glass insurance and got a second crack 100 miles later so I didn't have to feel bad about using insurance for a new windshield! I'm still waiting until winter is over to get it repaired. Snow plows kick up a lot of rocks from the median.

In the several years of owning a '98 Isuzu Rodeo, I never got a crack in the windshield and I drove the same roads as I did in the 4R. I've already had to repair 3 cracks in the windshield--and I've only had it since December 17th!
The only advice I can give ya is to carry some clear vinyl tape with you (my insurance agent gave me a sheet of these when I got my coverage), and as soon as you get a chip or bullseye, pull over, put a sticker on it, and in the next several hours, get a glass chip repair place to fix it.
The tape keeps water and other crap from getting inside the chip, and it "supposedly" keeps it from spreading instantly. All three chips I had, I did this and after the repair the chips never expanded. I can barely see 2 of them, and the worst one (the bullseye, about the size of a dime), I can see the round area slightly in the right light.
I dunno about why the 4r is so prone to chips and stuff, but there's something about either the body design and how air flows over the body, or the angle of the glass. I still love my 4r, but I know of 2 other 4r's that have the same issue with rocks!:moping:

From my insurance company (Geico).
Mine is $6 a month for both my 4Runner and my wife's car. New windshield is probably around $200 (guessing), so for $72 a year for both cars I think it's definitely worth it. If I have to replace either of our windshields at least every other year, I'm ahead.
