Crank Seal DIY:

I finally got around to changing my timing belt. For 16 years old and 109,000 miles it looked pretty darn good. But looks can be deceiving for upon closer inspection the tensioner was completely maxed out and the belt was so stretched that I could have pulled it off the top idler without having to exert much force to remove it. Not good.

There have been many good DIYs written about timing belt DIYs but I never saw one that covered crank seal removal. Having removed probably a dozen in my shade tree career, I snapped two pics of how it took me 10 minutes to replace it.

You need this tool if you want it done right::thumb:

Place the lip of the tool through the old seal and behind it at about 10 o'clock, then use the guide for leverage against the oil pump housing and pop out the seal. Quick and painless.

To insert the new one I used a seal installer from a seal kit I bought at a swap meet for $25. One could easily just use some PVC that is 2 1/8" in its outer diameter cut to about 3" long and be just fine. I use a 5oz tack hammer to hit mine in, found at Home Depot for $7, lightly tapping it in a clockwise manner. I used some grease on the inner lip for it to go in the oil pump housing more easily.

I didn't do the cam seals since I plan to replace the valve stem seals in the spring and will do such then.
