Crankshaft bolt removal questions!

Hello I'm preparing to do my water pump and timing belt change. I was wondering if anyone's done the starter method on the 5vzfe. I'm nervous about this thing being impossible to get off by hand. I don't have an impact wrench FYI. Thanks

I did it. Worked fine.

What about tightening? What did you do to keep the pulley held in place? I was looking at some make-shift/ghetto tools but I'm not sure if wood would suffice to make a lever to hold into it with some bolts. If I get a steel plate I don't think the drill bits I have will work. Trying to save money lol

2x4 works fine. Leave plenty of wood PAST the hole, put the bolts on the diagonal and avoid knots near the hole and it won't splinter.

Put two 3/8" drill bits in the pulley, then place the 2x against them as described and bash with hammer. Drill out dimples. Place your socket halfway between the holes and draw a circle around it. Hole saw that out. Insert two 3/8" bolts. Done!

No plans, no measurements. I have never seen one made right that failed. Mine has done three.

I used the starter method to remove the crank pulley and it worked fine. I also used a 2x4 just like the one shown to reinstall. Mine did crack at about 200ftlbs but it held long enough for me to make sure I had reached the torque spec. I rented both a breaker bar and the torque wrench from the local auto parts store. You can do it.
