Crap! What happened?

I was on my way to work this morning and while taking off from a stop my 1990 3.0 bogged and almost died. I thought I just muffed the takeoff but then it seemed to run a little ruff and the idle RPM dropped about 300. When I got to work and popped the hood, the motor is ticking like crazy and I cant seem to hear where its coming from.

Am I screwed?

I'm no expert on the 3vz motors but I would start by puling the plugs and see if one of them came apart in your motor. If that is not it then I would lean towards a bad valve in your heads. Either way with a bad ticking sound I would leave it parked until you fix it. If you continue to drive on it then it could be catastrophic to your engine.

Ticking, as in as it idles, does the "ticking" go up as you rev the motor? If so, sounds like you spun a rod or mainshaft berring.

You can rule out the spark plug idea... I was thinking simple and easy first hoping for you that maybe a spark plug came apart.

It's not looking good for you... Either way you're looking at a tear down of at least the top end of the motor. Do you know what side it's coming from? If you can narrow that down then you can pull and inspect the head. If the head is in good shape then I would lean towards a rod or crank bearing.

did you check the oil level?
dont be to hasty to think bearings it could just be your timing belt skipped a tooth and has a strip falling off and it hitting something when it spins around.

So I took a scope out to listne to it. It is not coming from the timing cover. Definitly coming from inside the motor. It is not completely constant at idle. It quiets down almost to nothing then rattles a little. I cant tell if it sounds more like a rattle or a slap. When I rev it id definitly gets loud. Oil level is perfect. No smoke or anything out the exhaust.

Is it even worth fixing this 3.0 with 230,000 miles on it? I think I can get a rebuild in town for 1k or a 3.4 swap for 1.5k.

depends on time constraint and your ability's really
any 3.4 you can buy will already have mileage on it and youll need a lot of components from both engines
but if you rebuild your 3.0 its fresh and your ready to go another 200,000 miles
but like i said its all about how much time money and ability you have

The ticking gets a louder and faster when you rev it.

Going by all you have posted, I am going to say its 90% likely to be a rod/main berring spun.

Now the "is it worth trying to fix, or just replace with a new motor" the thing to consider on this is..

A new motor is going to last you years and years...but isnt the cheep way to go. You could try to fix the one you have now, but if its serious enough of a problem, you could just be tossing a bandaid over the issue.

You should take it to a mechanic they would be able to diagnose it in less than an .5 hour. Then go from there.

Well here is what it was!

Is it just me or is this a bad design?
