Crawl control vs. A-track w/ light steady foot??

Lockers are also a gimmick for noobs with no driver skills. All you really need is wheels and skillz. He wouldn’t know though because he uses atrac.
Obviously we haven't wheeled the same things in our lives as each other. Lockers make all the difference in the world, but also remember they can get you in far more trouble if you don't know what you're doing or your spotter sucks (read: much easier to get into roll situation).

Never had anything like A Trac before and don't use it much on the T4R because it doesn't really wheel more than dirt roads. Various Jeeps through the years though, a ton of black or red trails in the NE and EC, many times lockers were mandatory front and rear just to go along. Think of the old Rattler or Voodoo at Paragon or some of the harder trails at the Big Dogs events. You don't even see 4 Runners on those trails, much less with open diffs.

I am a believer in crawl control.

Before buying my 4runner, I did a lot of research on it and I think I must have watched at least 50 different YouTube videos on it. I have seen quite a bit of videos where skilled off-roaders where stuck and couldn't get out until they used crawl control.

From what I understand, using MTS + Crawl control at the same time is the best for really bad situations. MTS gives the computer a little more information on what type of stuff you're stuck on, and helps crawl control determine what to do a little better.

I'll probably never use it as I don't do any crazy off-roading, but I think it's a cool feature to have.

i've read this twice in different threads about using crawl control and mts at the same time but my 2016 won't do it. is there some mod that can be done to make them work at the same time? sorta doesn't make sense since they do the same thing (as far as using brakes and throttles)

I tried locking the rear diff when stuck in sand but of course it will not work. Lockers are good when you got a wheel up in the air. And as others have stated, they can sometimes get you too far into the gnarly stuff or slide your ass out. Regarding the video of the taco using crawl control, a competent driver would be able to get out of. Granted crawl control is great if you are new to offroading or maybe need super focus on an obstacle.

I've saw a video on YouTube of a 4runner getting stuck, the driver/tester had someone from Toyota in the passenger seat to explain the features of the 4runner. The Toyota guy explained that to get the best out of crawl control, turn on MTS, make a suitable selection, then engage crawl control.

It seemed to work for the guy in this video.

I'll try and find it again.

Watch the videos from the middle east. Not a chance any driver could do what crawl does in some situations like this. YouTube regardless of lockers or not.

I don’t have sand where I’m at but the key is to not get yourself stuck in the first place. I’ve wheeled enough in sand on highway tires to learn, plus I’ve read extensively. Every terrain is different and requires knowledge of how to approach them. You can’t do in mud what you can do in sand. It’s that simple but it’s also what makes wheeling so fun and interesting. If you don’t have that knowledge then you rely on gadgets to save you. Proper tires at proper pressure in the sand is key, as well as proper acceleration and stopping. If you do all that right and approach your wheeling with the correct knowledge, even when you’re starting to get stuck, you won’t need any of these other things. That’s just a fact.

You can’t have them simultaneously engaged. If you have MTS on then it will turn off when you engage crawl control and reengage when you disable it.

yes, that has been my experience. too me, it would seem if off camber on a hill,,, my unfavoritist thing to do, crawl control without locker on would seem ideal ,,,,just fyi, i just got my 4runner so haven't done much with it,,,, been old school in the past.
