Crazydubman's 97 limited runner build

WOW. Just finished reading your entire build. 32 pages... check, only took me 2 days haha.

I have some questions specifically towards the SAW.

First of all the ones marketed for the 3rd gen 4runners what are there exact specs? 2.5X?13

I noticed several pages back when you were dialing in the coilovers you mentioned that maybe you'd look into a slightly longer spring rather than put so much preload into them. Is that even possible with that size shock? I had some 2.0X6X14 FOA coilovers on a different truck and 14" was the maximum size spring that would even fit.

But based on a lot of pics i'm seeing on 4runners with coilovers it looks like most of them could make use of a spring 1-2" longer and not have so much preload. Why wouldnt these companies already put on the longest fitting spring in the first place? taking out most of the preload.

I also find it kind of strange that SAW's coilover for the 4runner use a 13" spring because most springs come in 8,10,12,14,16 etc. Ive never seen a 13" spring for a coilover. On SAW website they dont even list a 13" spring in their spring section if you wanted to buy another one. Does anyone know if SAW would offer you to use a different rate besides 650 and 750... what if you wanted 600?

SAW can build anything you want. However, you have to order them through a vendor because they don't sell direct to the public. Bilstein Shocks, KW Suspensions and much more: eShocks.com have been the cheapest out of the box for them that I have seen. www.offroadwarehouse.com in Temecula was always very willing to work with me on building a package that will suit my needs. Whether it would have been Fox or SAW or any other vendor. Aaron is a great guy to deal with there.

The want for a longer spring wasn't nessesarily because of the preload. In my case, it was because the collar is threaded so far down, that in order to adjust it, I had to undo my uniball on the UCA and swing it out of the way. It wasn't a huge deal but still kind of a pain as it no longer is as quick of an adjustment.

Yeah I understand that the collar was in the way of the UCA for ease of adjustment and thats why you wanted the longer spring, but what i'm thinking is if your lifting the truck by spinning the collar down lower and lower. The more you go the tighter the coil gets with less space between each wrap. This is what lifts the front end. Obviously you already know this.

What I'm saying is why wouldnt most people put a 1-2" longer coil on so that way to get the lift their looking for they dont have to turn the collar so far down and make the spring so tight. Rather than having the collar down showing 2.25" of thread... get a 1" taller coil and now spin the collar down to 1.25" of threads showing and your spring is now less tight creating a smoother ride and better up-travel.

Correct me if I'm wrong.

No your right. That's what I was thinking when I posted about it. I was thinking of having it setup like my 06's coilovers. The collar is all the way bottomed out instead of starting at 1.5" of threads.

Someone would need to test it first to make sure that the 14" spring would fit on the shock and bolt in. There is a chance it will be slightly too tall therefore it will have to be compressed to even get on the shock. Could you take some measurements at some point to see if I'd fit?

I may have missed this back when you were talking about your shocks earlier in this thread, did you say that the "extended" travel help you to gain about 1" more down travel but will take away (limit) your up travel by about 1". so basically gain down travel but loose up travel?

There is no limit in up travel with mine. My 305's are shoved in my fenders at full stuff about 2". All it does is gain down travel.

I am running the ICON extended front shock with 14" 700lb King coils.

So the springs fit ok on the shock and didnt have to be compressed at all in order to fit on the shock? Thats great if they fit with no issues on the ICONS but I hope they will as well on the SAWs cause I like that the SAW are about $200 cheaper.

The ICON uses a 13" 650lb coil spring, which did not provide enough lift after I added modifications. The ICON springs, after reaching maximum thread exposure, maxed out at 2". After doing some research I found the 14" 700lb King coil springs. After adjustment, the Kings provided a full 3" lift and the thread exposure was half of what it was. Currently it is at 3 1/2" lift.

When i'm ready to order, I think i'll just go with the SAW extended travel and buy a pair of Eibach 3.0x14x600 springs and test them out. There pretty cheap so it might be a good little experiment to see how they do. Seems like 650 is a little stiff for a stock 4runner with no weight added but I could be wrong.

I have 13" 650lb coils on my Icon's and they are stiffer, but I prefer it. I want to try the 14" 600lb coils, but you'll be fine with the 650lbs. Many dealers or manufacturers will swap the coils for you when you purchase the coilover. I'm sure DownSouthMotorsports.com will.

I'd order these though since they are $500 off and resi'd. 58715SD 95.5 - 04 Tacoma Extended Travel Remote Reservoir Front Coil-over Shock Kit - ICON Vehicle Dynamics

Before I added any mods the 13" 650lb ICON coils were perfect as a DD and trails. With the spanner tool and a floor jack, adjusting the springs is very easy, 5 turns and it rises an 1/8". The ICONs come from the factory preset for a 2" lift. With a stock 4runner it took several minutes to adjust to 2.5 inches which I ran for several months before the modifications started. I do not have the model with the resi's.

Where is everyone mounting the resi's so they don't get in the way of tire stuffing? Any pics?

You should probably post this somewhere else instead of in Dubman's thread, you will get more responses asking this question in its own thread. Try and stay relevant to the OP's truck since this is his build thread.

I wish I had reservoirs to mount. Haha

True true. My bad kinda forgot I was in someone's build thread and kept typing haha. Aside from all that I'm glad I'm following this thread and excited to see what's next crazydubman.

Haha no worries guys. I figured it would get back on track soon. :happens:

I really didnt want to come off like an ass, so i tried to word that as carefully as possible.

Back on topic, now that you are fully armored up are you still happy with your own spring rate and damping action front and rear? Ive got a new bumper and winch going on next week and am curious to see how that extra weight out front changes things.

Honestly I'm completely happy with how it rides and performs now. The front is very plush and the rear is very smooth without being harsh at all regardless of how much weight is back there. Fully loaded up for a camping trip and the rear maybe drops an inch and gets even smoother. Really glad I went with the suspension components I did. Still have a rear tire carrier to make but I'm about at the daily weight I want.

Edit:

One thing though that I should mention. The addicted bumpers are quite a bit lighter than a full plate bumper. Front is about 65 I think and the rear about 70-75. Plus using synthetic winch line takes a lot off the front end as well.
